Practical Cost Optimization Patterns: Implementing Well-Architected Cloud Principles

Designing cloud infrastructure requires balancing agility, reliability, and cost-efficiency. Under the AWS Well-Architected Framework, cost optimization is not about cutting necessary resources—it is about avoiding unintentional waste and aligning resource capacity with actual demand.

Here are four foundational patterns to evaluate across compute, storage, networking, and governance workloads.

1. Compute: Right-Sizing & Capacity Models

  • Automated Sizing Recommendations: Leverage AWS Compute Optimizer to evaluate vCPU, memory, and storage utilization metrics rather than relying on static estimates.
  • Workload-Matched Purchasing:
    • On-Demand: Unpredictable, short-term workloads that cannot be interrupted.
    • Savings Plans & Reserved Instances: Baseline, steady-state usage (1- or 3-year commitment).
    • Spot Instances: Fault-tolerant, stateless compute pipelines (e.g., batch processing, rendering, asynchronous jobs).
  • Dynamic Elasticity: Configure AWS Auto Scaling to scale in capacity during off-peak hours automatically.

2. Storage: Lifecycle Tiering & Access Patterns

  • Unknown Access Frequency: Deploy Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering for objects with changing or unknown access patterns to avoid manual lifecycle tracking.
  • Predictable Archival: Set automated lifecycle transitions to S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval or S3 Glacier Deep Archive for long-term historical records that require infrequent access.
  • Object Housekeeping: Create expiration rules to clean up incomplete multipart uploads and old object versions.

3. Networking: Data Transfer Efficiency

  • VPC Endpoints (Gateway Endpoints): Route internal traffic destined for Amazon S3 privately through the AWS network rather than passing through NAT Gateways or the public internet.
  • Traffic Minimization: Locate interdependent compute and database instances within the same Availability Zone unless multi-AZ high availability or disaster recovery is explicitly required.

4. Continuous Governance & Auditing

  • Proactive Budgeting: Define threshold alerts in AWS Budgets to receive notifications via Amazon SNS before forecasted spend exceeds targets.
  • Automated Inspection: Regularly inspect AWS Trusted Advisor checks to detect unattached Elastic IP addresses, idle EBS volumes, and underutilized resources.
  • Audit Trail Archival: Store AWS CloudTrail log files in cost-effective S3 storage classes to maintain compliance without unnecessary operational overhead.

Architecture Discussion

When modernizing a monolithic application on AWS:
Do you prioritize refactoring directly to managed serverless services (such as AWS Lambda and Amazon DynamoDB), or do you start by right-sizing existing instances in an Auto Scaling Group behind an Application Load Balancer?
Share your migration criteria and trade-offs in the discussion below.
