Understanding Amazon EC2: Launching and Managing Cloud Instances
Learn the basics of Amazon EC2, including how to launch an instance, configure networking and security settings, select an Availability Zone, and verify that the instance is running successfully.
Understanding Amazon EC2: Launching and Managing Cloud Instances
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is an AWS service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. EC2 instances are virtual servers that can be used to run applications, host websites, perform development tasks, and much more.
Launching an EC2 Instance
To launch an EC2 instance, first open the Amazon EC2 console and select Launch instance. During the launch process, several configuration options are available.
The first step is selecting an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). An AMI provides the operating system and other software required for the instance. Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, Windows, and other operating systems are available.
Next, select an appropriate instance type. The instance type determines the computing resources available to the virtual server, such as CPU and memory.
Configuring Networking
EC2 instances are launched inside an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). During configuration, you can select the VPC and subnet where the instance will be placed.
An important concept is the Availability Zone (AZ). AWS Regions contain multiple Availability Zones, which are isolated locations designed to provide resilience. Launching instances in different Availability Zones can help improve availability.
Security Groups
Security groups act as virtual firewalls for EC2 instances. They control inbound and outbound network traffic.
For example, an SSH rule can allow secure administrative access to a Linux instance. Security group rules should be configured carefully and access should be limited to trusted sources whenever possible.
Storage and Key Pairs
EC2 instances can use Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes for persistent storage. When launching an instance, the required storage size and volume type can be configured.
A key pair can also be created or selected to securely connect to the instance. The private key should be stored securely because it is used for authentication.
Verifying the Instance
After launching, the instance appears in the EC2 Instances page. Important information such as the instance ID, instance state, instance type, status checks, and Availability Zone can be viewed there.
A successful launch normally shows the instance in the Running state after initialization and the required status checks pass.
