Understanding the AWS Shared Responsibility Model
A simple explanation of the AWS Shared Responsibility Model and how security responsibilities are divided between AWS and its customers.
When I started learning AWS, one concept that I found very important was the AWS Shared Responsibility Model.
The AWS Shared Responsibility Model explains how security responsibilities are divided between AWS and the customer.
AWS Responsibilities
AWS is responsible for security of the cloud. This includes:
- Physical security of AWS data centers
- AWS hardware and networking infrastructure
- Protection of the underlying cloud infrastructure
Customer Responsibilities
Customers are responsible for security in the cloud. Depending on the AWS service being used, this can include:
- Managing passwords and access permissions
- Configuring security groups
- Protecting application data
- Managing encryption settings
- Keeping applications and systems updated when required
For example, when using Amazon EC2, customers are responsible for configuring the operating system and controlling access to the instance.
Why is it important?
Understanding this model helps AWS users clearly understand what AWS manages and what they need to manage themselves.
While learning AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, I found this concept very useful because it showed me that cloud security is a shared responsibility.
I am looking forward to learning more about AWS and cloud security.
