My Journey into AWS and Generative AI as a BCS Student

As a TYBSc BCS student specializing in Core Computer Science, I share my journey into AWS, Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, and Cloud Computing. This article covers why I started learning AWS, my interest in Amazon Bedrock, learning through projects, challenges as a student, and my goals for building practical cloud and AI solutions.

Introduction

I am currently a Third Year BSc Computer Science (TYBSc BCS) student specializing in Core Computer Science. As I continue learning different areas of technology, I have developed a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, Cloud Computing, and software development.
Recently, I started exploring AWS to understand how cloud technology can be used to build and deploy real-world applications. This is the beginning of my AWS learning journey, and I want to use AWS Builder as a place to document what I learn, the projects I build, and the challenges I face along the way.

Why I Started Learning AWS

As a computer science student, I have learned programming concepts, databases, web development, and other fundamentals. However, I wanted to understand how applications work beyond the local development environment.
Cloud computing introduced me to a completely different perspective.
Instead of thinking only about writing code, I started thinking about questions such as:
  • How can an application be deployed online?
  • How can applications handle increasing users and data?
  • How can AI applications use cloud infrastructure?
  • How can different cloud services work together?
  • How can developers build scalable and reliable applications?
These questions motivated me to start exploring AWS.

My Interest in Artificial Intelligence

Alongside cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence has become one of my main areas of interest.
I am particularly interested in Generative AI because of its ability to work with text, documents, data, and other types of information.
As a student, I want to understand not only how to use AI tools, but also how AI applications are actually built and integrated into software systems.
This is one of the reasons I am exploring AWS services related to AI and Generative AI.

Exploring AWS and Amazon Bedrock

One AWS service that caught my attention is Amazon Bedrock.
Amazon Bedrock provides access to foundation models through AWS and can be used to build generative AI applications.
As a beginner, I am interested in learning how services like Bedrock can be integrated into applications to create useful AI-powered features.
My goal is not simply to experiment with AI models, but to understand the complete process:
Idea → AI model → Application → AWS → Real-world solution
I believe understanding this complete workflow will be valuable as I continue developing my computer science skills.

Learning Through Projects

One thing I have realized during my studies is that concepts become much easier to understand when I actually build something.
Instead of only watching tutorials or reading documentation, I want to apply what I learn through practical projects.
My projects have helped me explore areas such as:
  • Full-stack web development
  • Databases
  • Data analysis
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Generative AI
  • Cloud technologies
I am now looking at how AWS can become part of these projects and help me take them from local applications toward cloud-based solutions.

Challenges as a Student

Learning cloud and AI technologies as a student can sometimes feel overwhelming.
There are many services, tools, concepts, and technical terms to understand. At first, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
I have learned that I don't need to understand everything at once.
My current approach is to:
  1. Learn one concept at a time.
  2. Understand the basic idea before moving to advanced topics.
  3. Build small experiments.
  4. Learn from errors and documentation.
  5. Gradually apply the knowledge to larger projects.
This approach makes the learning process much more manageable.

What I Want to Learn Next

My AWS learning journey has only started, and there is still a lot I want to explore.
Some of my next goals are:
  • Learn AWS fundamentals properly.
  • Explore Amazon Bedrock and Generative AI.
  • Understand how AI applications can use cloud services.
  • Build and deploy practical cloud-based projects.
  • Learn more about cloud security and databases.
  • Understand how scalable applications are designed.
  • Document my projects and learning experiences.

Conclusion

As a TYBSc BCS Core Computer Science student, I see AWS as an opportunity to expand my knowledge beyond traditional programming and understand how modern applications are built using cloud technology.
I am still at the beginning of this journey, but I am excited to keep learning, experimenting, and building.
My goal is simple:
Learn continuously. Build practically. Improve with every project.
I hope to use AWS Builder to document this journey and connect with other learners and developers who are also exploring cloud, AI, and emerging technologies.
