My First Project with AWS EC2 as a student -What I Learned

How I launched my first EC2 instance as an ECE student in Chennai and hosted my portfolio website - my learnings and tips for other beginners

As an ECE student in Chennai, I started exploring AWS for my academic projects.
I recently learned about Amazon EC2 and how it helps host student projects without buying expensive hardware.
What I did:
  1. Created a free tier AWS account
  2. Launched my first t2.micro EC2 instance with Ubuntu
  3. Hosted a simple HTML portfolio website
  4. Learned about Security Groups and how to open port 80
Challenges I faced:
  • Understanding IAM roles initially
  • Configuring security groups
  • Connecting via SSH for the first time
What helped me:
AWS Builder Center articles and tutorials from other students. The community support is amazing.
My next goal is to learn S3 for storage and try deploying a Node.js app.
Tips for other students:
Start with Free Tier, follow the 3-layer architecture basics, and don't be afraid to experiment. Delete resources after use to avoid charges.
