Bridging the Agentic Gap: How to Deploy a Production-Ready MCP Server on AWS Lambda

Learn how to securely scale the Model Context Protocol (MCP) by migrating it from a local stdio stream into a production-ready, serverless AWS Lambda architecture utilizing Response Streaming and Server-Sent Events (SSE).

As agentic IDEs like Cursor, Windsurf, and Kiro become standard in our daily development loops, the conversation has rapidly shifted from "What can AI agents do?" to "How do we securely connect agents to our private engineering ecosystems?"
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has emerged as the open standard for giving LLM agents secure, context-aware access to data repositories, internal tools, and enterprise APIs. However, most tutorials show you how to run MCP servers locally via stdio.
If you want your entire engineering team's AI agents to securely query internal databases, read system architecture catalogs, or safely trigger environment deployments, you need a highly scalable, secure, and production-ready hosting architecture.
In this article, we’ll build and deploy a stateless MCP Server on AWS Lambda using Serverless SSE (Server-Sent Events) over HTTP, secured by Amazon API Gateway and AWS Secrets Manager.
To transition an MCP server from a local development environment to a production cloud architecture, we switch the transport layer from local stdio to a secure HTTP web endpoint.

  • Transport: Event-driven Server-Sent Events (SSE) handled via an asynchronous connection.
  • Compute: AWS Lambda keeps operations 100% serverless, zero-maintenance, and highly cost-effective.
  • Security: Amazon API Gateway paired with an IAM or OAuth authorizer ensures only verified developer identities can access your system context endpoints.
