Database Fundamentals I'm Revisiting as I Iearn AWS

Revisiting database fundamentals like SQL, normalization, relational databases, NoSQL, and data modeling while exploring how these concepts connect to AWS database services like Amazon RDS and Amazon DynamoDB. A beginner’s perspective on why understanding the fundamentals can make new technology easier to understand.

Lately, I've been spending some time going back to something I've already encountered quite a lot as an IS student: databases 😂
I've worked with relational databases, SQL, and database design in school projects, but honestly, there are still concepts I want to understand more deeply.
So, I thought, why not go back to the basics? 👀

What I'm Revisiting

Right now, I'm focusing on:
  • Primary and foreign keys
  • Relationships between data
  • Database normalization
  • SQL and relational databases
  • SQL vs. NoSQL
  • Transactions and data consistency
  • Data modeling and database design
One concept I'm looking at more closely is normalization.
It's easy to memorize the normal forms for an exam, but I'm more interested in understanding why normalization matters and what problems it actually helps solve.

Connecting Databases to AWS

This is also helping me understand AWS database services like Amazon RDS and Amazon DynamoDB.
Instead of simply asking:
"What does this service do?"
I'm trying to ask:
"What kind of database problem is this service designed to solve?"
I think understanding concepts like relational databases, NoSQL, scalability, and data consistency will give me a stronger foundation as I continue exploring AWS.
I'm still learning, but this has reminded me that sometimes going back to the basics helps new technology make more sense.

Now, Let's Hear From You!

For those learning or working with databases:
  • Which concept took you the longest to truly understand?
  • What's one database mistake that taught you an important lesson?
  • When learning a new database technology, do you start with the theory or a real project?
I'd love to hear your experiences and learn from the builders here!☁️
