Building Your First Generative AI Application with Amazon Bedrock

Learn how Amazon Bedrock can be used to build generative AI applications using foundation models through AWS APIs, with a simple beginner-friendly workflow and Python example.

Building Your First Generative AI Application with Amazon Bedrock

Generative AI is becoming an important part of modern application development. Instead of training a large language model from scratch, developers can use foundation models through managed cloud services.
Amazon Bedrock provides access to foundation models through APIs, making it possible to build generative AI applications without managing the underlying model infrastructure.

What is Amazon Bedrock?

Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed AWS service that provides access to foundation models from different model providers through a unified API experience.
It can be used to build applications such as:
  • AI assistants and chatbots
  • Text summarization tools
  • Question-answering applications
  • Content generation systems
  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications
  • AI-powered business applications

Basic Architecture

A simple generative AI application can follow this flow:
User → Application → Amazon Bedrock API → Foundation Model → Generated Response
The application sends a prompt to a foundation model through Amazon Bedrock. The model processes the prompt and returns a generated response.

Prerequisites

Before starting, you should have:
  1. An AWS account
  2. Appropriate IAM permissions
  3. Access to Amazon Bedrock models in your AWS Region
  4. Basic knowledge of Python
  5. The AWS SDK for Python (Boto3)

For Example:

User:
Explain cloud computing in simple terms.
Application:
Send the prompt to Amazon Bedrock.
Amazon Bedrock:
Invokes the selected foundation model.
Model:
Generates a response.
Application:
Displays the response to the user.

Calling Amazon Bedrock from Python

The AWS SDK for Python, Boto3, can be used to interact with AWS services programmatically.
A simplified example of creating a Bedrock Runtime client is:

import boto3

client = boto3.client(
"bedrock-runtime",
region_name="us-east-1"
