How APIs Connect Your App to the Real World

Learn how APIs work, why applications need them, and how they help connect frontend, backend, databases, and AI services.

How APIs Connect Your App to the Real World 🚀

When we use an application, many things happen behind the scenes. The frontend needs to communicate with the backend, the backend needs to access a database, and sometimes the application needs external services.
This communication is commonly done using APIs.

What is an API?

API stands for Application Programming Interface.
Simply put, an API allows two different software systems to communicate with each other.
For example:
Frontend → API → Backend → Database
The frontend sends a request through an API, the backend processes it, and the API returns the response.

Common HTTP Methods

  • GET → Retrieve data
  • POST → Create new data
  • PUT → Update existing data
  • DELETE → Remove data
For example:
1
GET /users/123
could request the details of user 123.
The server might respond with:
1
2
3
4
{
"id": 123,
"name": "Nivedhitha"
}

Why APIs Matter in AI Applications

APIs are especially important when building AI applications.
For example:
User → Frontend → Backend API → AI Model → Response
This allows the frontend to communicate with an AI model without directly exposing sensitive credentials.
