My First Experience with Amazon EC2: Launching My First Cloud Server
In this article, I share my first hands-on experience with Amazon EC2, including launching an instance, connecting via SSH, and deploying a simple web server. This journey helped me understand the fundamentals of cloud computing and AWS infrastructure.
My First Experience with Amazon EC2
Introduction
As I continue learning cloud computing with AWS, one of the first services I explored was Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). EC2 is a service that allows users to launch virtual servers in the cloud and run applications without purchasing physical hardware.
In this article, I will share my first experience creating and managing an EC2 instance.
What is Amazon EC2?
Amazon EC2 is a web service that provides secure and scalable computing capacity in the AWS Cloud. It enables users to create virtual machines, commonly known as instances, within minutes.
Some key benefits include:
- Scalability
- Pay-as-you-go pricing
- High availability
- Flexible operating system choices
- Easy integration with other AWS services
Steps I Followed
1. Launching an EC2 Instance
First, I logged in to the AWS Management Console and navigated to the EC2 service.
I selected:
- Amazon Linux 2023 AMI
- t2.micro instance type (Free Tier eligible)
- Default VPC settings
- Security Group allowing SSH access
After reviewing the configuration, I launched the instance.
2. Connecting to the Instance
Once the instance status changed to "Running," I connected using EC2 Instance Connect.
1
ssh -i my-key.pem ec2-user@public-ip-address
Successfully accessing the Linux terminal was an exciting experience because it demonstrated how cloud servers can be deployed within minutes.
3. Installing a Web Server
Next, I installed Apache Web Server.

4
sudo dnf update -y
sudo dnf install httpd -y
sudo systemctl start httpd
sudo systemctl enable httpd
After opening the public IP address in a browser, the Apache test page appeared successfully.
What I Learned
Through this hands-on practice, I learned:
- How to launch an EC2 instance
- Basic networking concepts
- Security Groups and firewall rules
- Remote server access using SSH
- Web server deployment on AWS
Conclusion
Amazon EC2 is an excellent starting point for anyone learning AWS. The service is easy to use, highly scalable, and provides valuable practical experience in cloud computing.
My next learning goal is to connect EC2 with Amazon RDS and deploy a complete web application architecture on AWS.
