Ai chatbot with AWS
Lets make our journey more simple by making our own chatbot using AWS
🤖 Build Your Own AI Chatbot on AWS — Beginner-Friendly Project
What if you could build your own AI chatbot using AWS without training an AI model from scratch?
In this project, we’ll create a simple architecture where a user sends a question → AWS processes the request → an AI foundation model generates the response → the answer is returned to the user.
The interesting part?
We don’t need to train a model ourselves.
We can use Amazon Bedrock to access foundation models through APIs.
🏗️ What Are We Building?
Our basic architecture will look like this:
👤 User
│
▼
🌐 Web / API
│
▼
⚡ AWS Lambda
│
▼
🤖 Amazon Bedrock
│
▼
🧠 Foundation Model
│
▼
💬 AI Response
│
▼
👤 User
The idea is simple:
User → Lambda → Bedrock → AI Model → Response
🔹 Step 1: Create an AWS Lambda Function
AWS Lambda allows us to run code without managing a server.
Create a Lambda function and choose a runtime such as Python.
Our Lambda function will receive the user’s question and send it to Amazon Bedrock.
Conceptually:
import boto3
bedrock = boto3.client("bedrock-runtime")
def lambda_handler(event, context):
question = event["question"]
# Send question to the selected foundation model
# and receive the generated response.
return {
"answer": "AI response goes here"
}
The exact request format depends on the foundation model you choose in Bedrock.
🔹 Step 2: Give Lambda Permission
This is an important part of the project.
Lambda needs permission to call the required Bedrock API.
Instead of giving the function broad permissions, follow the principle of:
🔐 Least Privilege
Give the Lambda execution role only the permissions required for the specific model/API operations it needs.
This is one of the most important concepts to understand when building AI applications in the cloud.
🔹 Step 3: Connect Amazon Bedrock
Now comes the interesting part.
Amazon Bedrock provides access to foundation models through AWS APIs.
Your application doesn’t need to know how the model was trained internally.
Your application simply sends a prompt and receives a response.
For example:
User:
"Explain cloud computing in simple words."
↓
Amazon Bedrock
↓
Foundation Model
↓
"Cloud computing means using
computing resources over the internet..."
This makes it possible to integrate generative AI into applications without building an entire ML infrastructure from scratch.
🔹 Step 4: Create an API
We need a way for our frontend or application to communicate with Lambda.
One approach is:
Frontend
↓
Amazon API Gateway
↓
AWS Lambda
↓
Amazon Bedrock
Now our application can send something like:
{
"question": "What is AWS Lambda?"
}
Lambda processes the request and returns the AI-generated response.
🔹 Step 5: Add a Simple Frontend
The frontend can be extremely simple.
For example:
┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ 🤖 AWS AI Chat │
│ │
│ Ask your question... │
│ │
│ [ What is Amazon S3? ] │
│ │
│ [ ASK AI ] │
│ │
│ AI Response: │
│ Amazon S3 is an object │
│ storage service... │
└──────────────────────────────┘
The frontend sends the question to API Gateway.
API Gateway invokes Lambda.
Lambda calls Bedrock.
Bedrock returns the response.
And the response is displayed to the user.
🚀 Final Architecture
Our complete beginner project now looks like:
👤 USER
│
▼
🌐 Web Application
│
▼
🔗 API Gateway
│
▼
⚡ AWS Lambda
│
▼
🤖 Amazon Bedrock
│
▼
🧠 Foundation Model
│
▼
💬 AI Response
│
▼
👤 USER
And that’s it!
We have created the basic architecture for an AI-powered application using AWS.
🔥 But This Is Only the Beginning
Once this basic chatbot works, we can make it much more powerful.
For example:
📄 Chat with your PDFs
PDF
↓
S3
↓
Knowledge Base / Retrieval
↓
Bedrock
↓
AI Answer
🗣️ Voice AI
Voice
↓
Speech-to-Text
↓
Bedrock
↓
AI Response
↓
Text-to-Speech
↓
Voice
🏢 Enterprise AI Assistant
Employee
↓
AI Assistant
↓
Authentication
↓
Bedrock
↓
Company Knowledge
↓
Secure Response
This is where AI + Cloud + DevOps becomes really interesting.
🧠 What I Learned From This Project
Building an AI application isn’t only about the AI model.
A production-ready application also needs:
🔐 Security
📊 Monitoring
💰 Cost management
⚡ Scalability
🌐 Networking
🔑 IAM
🚀 Deployment automation
