Agents for Humans: Building BillPilot — an Everyday Agent that only interrupts when it matters

Building BillPilot, an Everyday Agent with Strands Agents SDK that handles routine household bills quietly and only interrupts humans when an anomaly or duplicate needs attention.

Agents for Humans: Building BillPilot — an Everyday Agent that only interrupts when it matters
For the AWS Agents for Humans hackathon I built BillPilot, an Everyday Agent using the Strands Agents SDK. The brief that stuck with me was simple: agents should handle repetitive work in the background and only surface a human when there is a real decision.
Household bills are a perfect fit. Due dates, duplicates, and surprise subscription bumps are small individually and exhausting together. People do not need another dashboard. They need something that quietly prepares the’s contract is explicit in code, not only in the prompt:
• If a bill amount is inside the expected range and it is not a duplicate → prepare payment checklist and mark it auto-handled (no ping).
• If the amount is unexpected or the charge looks duplicated → notify_human with a clear reason and a recommended action.
That decision gate is the heart of the design. It matches the hackathon theme better than a chat UI that merely talks about bills.
How Strands Agents shaped the build
I implemented six Strands @tool functions:
(1) list_bills
(2) parse_bill
(3) check_anomaly
(4) queue_payment_prep
(5) notify_human
(6) mark_auto_handled
