How to Earn AWS Badges and Get Free AWS Credits in 2026

Amazon Web Services provides several opportunities for students, developers, and beginners to learn cloud computing without spending large amounts of money. Through AWS Builder Center, AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate, Student Rewards, and the AWS Free Tier, users can earn digital badges, receive AWS cloud credits, access premium training, and even obtain certification exam vouchers.

Learning cloud computing becomes much easier when you can actually deploy applications instead of only watching tutorials. AWS provides services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Bedrock, and many others that developers can use to build realistic applications.
The main concern for students is usually cost. Fortunately, AWS currently provides several ways to obtain free resources. However, it is important to understand that AWS badges and AWS credits are not normally the same thing. Some badges simply demonstrate that you completed training, while the newer AWS Student Rewards program directly connects certain Builder Center badge milestones with AWS credits and certification rewards.

1. Start with an AWS Builder ID

A good starting point is creating an AWS Builder ID. Builder ID is different from a normal AWS account. Your AWS account is where services such as EC2, Lambda, S3, and RDS are actually deployed and billed. Builder ID is your personal identity for services such as AWS Builder Center and AWS Skill Builder.
Using Builder ID, you can create your AWS Builder Center profile, participate in the AWS community, access training resources, and work toward badges.
Students should use an email address they expect to keep for a long time because the profile can eventually contain badges, learning achievements, articles, and other evidence of their AWS experience.

2. AWS Student Rewards: Earn Badges and AWS Credits

One of the most interesting opportunities for university students in 2026 is AWS Student Rewards on AWS Builder Center.
AWS announced that verified higher-education students can receive rewards for participating in the AWS Builder community. Students must generally be at least 18 years old and enrolled at an accredited higher-education institution, with eligibility verified through SheerID.
After verification, completing your Builder Center profile can unlock 12 months of AWS Skill Builder Premium access. This provides access to hundreds of AWS courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation resources, and interactive learning experiences.
Students can then earn Builder Center badges by genuinely participating in the community. Activities include publishing technical articles, commenting on useful discussions, maintaining engagement, contributing ideas, interacting with other builders, and completing badge-specific requirements.
The current Student Rewards milestones are:
  • 7 Builder Center badges → $10 in AWS Credits
  • 14 Builder Center badges → an additional $20 in AWS Credits, giving $30 in total
  • 21 Builder Center badges → AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher worth $100
These rewards make the program particularly useful for university students interested in cloud engineering, DevOps, software engineering, cybersecurity, or AI.
Rather than posting low-quality content simply to obtain badges, students should use Builder Center as a technical portfolio. For example, after deploying a React application to AWS, you could write an article explaining the architecture, problems you encountered, and how you solved them. You simultaneously improve your communication skills, build your professional profile, and progress toward AWS rewards.

3. Earn AWS Training Badges Through Skill Builder

AWS also provides AWS Training Badges through AWS Skill Builder.
These badges are different from the community badges associated with Student Rewards. Their main purpose is to demonstrate that you have developed knowledge in a particular AWS technology or learning path.
AWS states that learners can register for AWS Skill Builder, enroll in eligible learning programs such as Knowledge Badge Readiness Paths or Cloud Quest, complete the required training and assessment, and earn a badge. Some badge assessments require a score of at least 80%. The badge can then be claimed through Credly and shared on platforms such as LinkedIn.
AWS Skill Builder currently provides hundreds of free learning resources, so beginners can start without purchasing a subscription.
These badges can strengthen a CV because employers can verify the credential rather than simply trusting a statement saying that you studied AWS.

4. Use AWS Educate for Free Hands-On Learning

Another excellent platform for beginners is AWS Educate.
AWS Educate provides free cloud-learning content covering areas such as compute, storage, networking, databases, and cloud operations. Importantly, AWS Educate states that learners can register and access its learning environment without a credit card.
You can complete courses such as Getting Started with Storage, Compute, Networking, and Databases while getting practical experience with services including S3, EC2, VPC, and RDS.
AWS Educate also provides shareable digital badges for eligible learning activities. Therefore, students who are uncomfortable creating a billing-enabled AWS account immediately can begin with Educate, understand the services, and later move to their own AWS environment.

5. Get Up to $200 Through the AWS Free Tier

Badges are not the only method of obtaining credits.
AWS currently gives eligible new AWS customers $100 in Free Tier credits when they create an account. Users can earn up to another $100, meaning a new customer may receive as much as $200 in AWS credits.
The additional credits are earned by completing activities available in the Explore AWS section of the AWS Management Console. Current activities include launching an EC2 instance, experimenting with a foundation model in Amazon Bedrock, creating an AWS Budget, creating a Lambda web application, and launching an Amazon RDS database.
These activities must be completed within the applicable eligibility period. AWS currently states that users have up to six months after opening the account to complete activities for additional credits, while earned Free Tier credits expire 12 months after account creation.
This means someone starting AWS today could potentially combine structured learning with actual project development instead of spending the credits randomly.

6. Choose the AWS Free Plan Carefully

AWS now provides both Free and Paid account plans.
The Free plan is particularly useful for experimentation because AWS states that you will not incur charges while using the Free plan. It ends after six months or after the available credits are fully consumed, whichever happens first.
However, there is an important limitation: AWS documentation says Free plan accounts are generally not eligible for other promotional credits and discounts, while Paid plan accounts can receive additional promotional credits. Therefore, if you receive credits through Student Rewards or another AWS promotion, always check the redemption instructions and account-plan requirements before applying them.
AWS may also request payment information during account verification. AWS states that a credit card may be required to secure an account and prevent fraud, and some registration flows may temporarily authorize approximately $1 for verification.

Building a Better AWS Learning Strategy

The best approach is not simply collecting badges. Use the programs together.
Start with AWS Educate and Skill Builder to understand the fundamentals. Verify yourself for Student Rewards if eligible and build your Builder Center profile. Earn badges by documenting things you genuinely learn and build. Create a new AWS account and use the Free Tier credits carefully for real projects.
For example, you could deploy a full-stack application using React or Next.js, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS or DynamoDB, S3, CloudFront, IAM, CloudWatch, and infrastructure-as-code tools. Such a project teaches considerably more than simply completing isolated tutorials.

Conclusion

AWS provides an unusually strong combination of free learning and practical cloud resources in 2026. Verified university students can use AWS Student Rewards to obtain $30 in AWS credits and potentially a $100 Foundational Certification voucher by reaching the required badge milestones. At the same time, eligible new AWS customers can receive $100 immediately and earn another $100 through Free Tier activities, giving up to $200 in Free Tier credits.
Combined with AWS Educate, free Skill Builder courses, digital badges, hands-on labs, and Builder Center, these programs provide an excellent pathway from beginner cloud learning to real production-style projects. The most valuable strategy is to treat the badges and credits not as rewards to collect, but as resources for building practical skills, creating portfolio projects, and eventually preparing for professional AWS certifications.
