Building a Production-Ready AI Agent: Why You Shouldn't Reinvent the Harness

Stop reinventing the agent harness! Here is how to structure scalable, production-ready AI agents using serverless building blocks, persistent session management, and isolated tool execution.

AI/ML
When building generative AI applications today, it is easy to get caught up in designing the core intelligence and forget about the underlying infrastructure. However, the moment an agent moves from a local prototype to a production environment, engineering challenges compound quickly. You suddenly need reliable session management, persistent user context, security boundaries, and a scalable way to execute deterministic code.
Instead of writing a custom harness from scratch to handle state, memory, and tool execution, the most efficient approach is to lean on managed serverless building blocks. By pairing an agent orchestration engine with lightweight tools, you can keep the core architecture clean and maintainable.
For instance, an effective design involves packaging agent logic and protocol servers as containerized tasks, using Amazon S3 to store conversation history and session state. When the agent needs to perform concrete actions—such as running SQL queries against a data lake or interacting with internal APIs—it can call microservices backed by AWS Lambda and API Gateway.

This approach separates the non-deterministic reasoning of the model from the deterministic execution of your tools. It ensures that user queries remain contextual across multiple turns, security constraints are strictly enforced at the API layer, and the application scales automatically without requiring you to manage always-on infrastructure.
By offloading session management and runtime overhead to established cloud infrastructure, you can focus on what actually drives value: refining agent prompt logic, expanding tool capabilities, and solving real user problems.
