What We Know About the New AWS Certified AI Business Strategist AIB-C01 Exam
Let's explore the target audience for this business-oriented certification, what the beta exam covers, and how it differs from the AIF-C01 to determine whether pursuing it is the right choice for you.
On September 1, 2026, AWS launched the new AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) exam in beta. Classified under the Business category, this certification is designed for professionals who make decisions related to the adoption of artificial intelligence within organizations.
This exam assesses candidates’ ability to identify opportunities, justify investments, establish governance practices, and scale AI initiatives.
In this article, you will learn about the exam format, the topics covered, the main differences compared with the AWS Certified AI Practitioner, and whether this certification is worth pursuing.
Why AWS Certified AI Business Strategist?
This certification validates the ability to turn AI capabilities into measurable business outcomes. This includes using AWS services to develop business cases, prioritize initiatives, measure return on investment (ROI), manage risks, and drive technology adoption across the organization.
AWS has classified this certification under the Business category, separating it from the familiar Practitioner, Associate, Professional, and Specialty categories. This reinforces the fact that, with this exam, AWS is prioritizing strategic decision-making rather than technical implementation.
In addition, candidates are not required to know how to program, build machine learning models, or configure AWS infrastructure.
However, this does not mean that you do not need to understand AWS AI and machine learning services.
The official AIB-C01 exam guide recommends having a strategic-level understanding of Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker AI, and Amazon Quick. It also covers the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, the shared responsibility model , the Responsible AI Lens of the AWS Well-Architected Framework, the AWS Pricing Calculator , AWS Cost Explorer, and AWS Marketplace.
You will not need to know how to configure these services. Instead, you must understand how they can support decisions related to costs, governance, security, business case development, and the scaling of AI initiatives.
Who Is This New Certification For?
This exam was developed for professionals who evaluate, advocate for, or scale AI initiatives within their organizations or for their clients.
The roles mentioned by AWS include:
- Product and program managers
- Sales and business development professionals
- Line-of-business leaders
- Consultants
- Business analysts
- Marketing professionals
There is no requirement to hold another AWS Certification before taking this exam. However, AWS recommends approximately six months of experience working with AI initiatives or alongside teams that are adopting the technology.
How Is It Different from the AWS Certified AI Practitioner?
The AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) validates foundational knowledge of AI, machine learning, generative AI, and AWS AI services.
The AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) evaluates the candidate’s business judgment, which is necessary to select investments, develop business cases, manage risks, and move initiatives from experimentation to production.

Important Points About the AIB-C01
At the time this article was published, I identified a discrepancy regarding the exam duration. While the beta exam page states 170 minutes, the AIB-C01 exam guide states 130 minutes.
When I scheduled my exam, the total duration displayed was 210 minutes, including the ESL +30 accommodation.

The AIB-C01 exam appointment is showing a duration of 210 minutes.
For this reason, when scheduling your exam, confirm the duration displayed on the payment page.
Another important point, which is no different from other AWS exams, is that multiple-response questions require you to select all the correct answers to receive credit. Unanswered questions are considered incorrect, but there is no penalty for guessing.
If a candidate passes the beta exam, the certification remains valid for three years. However, the results may take up to five business days to become available, and each candidate may take the beta version only once.
Anyone who earns the certification by February 15, 2027, will also receive the additional Early Adopter digital badge. However, keep in mind that this date is related to the badge and should not be interpreted as the end date of the beta period.
Because the exam is not available in Portuguese, Brazilian candidates whose native language is not English may request the ESL +30 accommodation before scheduling the exam. This accommodation adds 30 minutes to the duration of an exam taken in English.
What Is Covered on the AIB-C01 Exam?
| Domain | Weight | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| 1. AI Fundamentals and Literacy | 24% | AI concepts, data types, AI agents, prompt engineering, tokens, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) |
| 2. AI Strategy and Business Value Creation | 28% | Use cases, investments, key performance indicators (KPIs), return on investment (ROI), costs, and build, buy, or partner decisions |
| 3. AI Governance and Responsible Leadership | 24% | Responsible AI, regulatory compliance, risks, intellectual property, and human oversight |
| 4. Business Readiness, Leadership, and AI Transformation | 24% | Organizational maturity, data readiness, leadership, workforce development, and scaling AI initiatives |
Final Tips for This Certification
First, I recommend reading the official AIB-C01 exam guide and organizing your preparation around the four domains.
Because this is a strategy-focused exam, simply knowing the definitions will not be enough. You will need to apply these concepts or study certain topics in greater depth. For example, if you do not have a business background, you should understand how ROI works.
Second, AWS offers an Exam Prep Plan and an official set of exam-style questions. At the moment, these resources are available only in English.

Third, consider waiting until the exam leaves the beta phase. The number of questions will decrease to 65, and the exam may become available in Portuguese. This would make the questions easier for Brazilian candidates to interpret and would likely result in more study materials becoming available.
Is the AWS AIB-C01 Beta Exam Worth Taking?
In my opinion, the AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) makes more sense for business and sales professionals, as well as those involved in decisions related to AI adoption. For professionals looking to validate their knowledge of AWS AI concepts and services, the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) remains the more appropriate path.
In the future, this exam will also be important for professionals seeking to earn the AWS Golden Jacket. With the introduction of the AWS Certified AI Business Strategist, these professionals will need to pass this exam once it is incorporated into the requirements for receiving the jacket.
At the moment, the main incentive for taking the exam during this period is the opportunity to earn the additional Early Adopter badge. According to AWS, anyone who earns the certification by February 15, 2027, will receive this digital badge.

The AIB-C01 badge and the Early Adopter badge.
In addition, because the exam is still in beta, I recommend checking the official page periodically. The format, domain weights, preparation resources, and some information in the exam guide may be updated when the standard version is released.
In summary, this certification expands the AWS Certification portfolio by recognizing strategic skills related to AI adoption in business. It may become a differentiator for candidates who want to demonstrate their knowledge of strategy, governance, value creation, and analytical thinking to an employer. Even so, I consider its immediate applicability in the job market to be limited. Its relevance will depend on whether companies begin requesting this credential.
Initially, I believe most of the demand may come from AWS itself and its strategic partners, possibly because of internal programs or requirements. If this demand does not emerge, the certification may remain a niche credential with less relevance than established certifications that are already requested in the job market.
Your decision to pursue this certification at this time should be based mainly on whether you want to earn the Early Adopter badge. Otherwise, my recommendation remains to wait until the exam leaves the beta phase and observe how much demand it gains in the job market.
