š§ NEW TO AWS? BUILDER CENTER IS WHERE YOU SHOULD START.
If you're new to AWS, there's a good chance you've already heard of AWS Builder Center.
Maybe you joined because someone shared a Wish and asked you to vote. š³ļø
Maybe you wanted to read an article. š
Maybe you heard about the new AWS Student Rewards program. š
But here's the thing:
š Builder Center is much bigger than voting on Wishes.
| What you want to do | Where to go |
|---|---|
| š Learn | Learn |
| š ļø Build | Workshops |
| š Check AWS availability | Capabilities by Region |
| š¤ Meet builders | Spaces |
| āļø Share what you learned | Articles |
| š” Influence AWS | Wishlist |
| š Earn rewards | Student Rewards |
AWS describes Builder CenterĀ as the official home for builders ā a place to learn, build, connect with other builders, explore AWS capabilities, and share what you're working on.
And if you're just starting your AWS journey, I'd actually recommend exploring Builder Center before trying to learn AWS randomly from hundreds of different places.
Think of it as a starting point for your AWS journey ā not just another website to visit. āļø
š Here's where I'd start.
1. START WITH LEARNINGĀ

The LearnĀ section is probably the first place I'd explore.
You can find AWS learning content, topics, and student-focused resources without having to figure everything out on your own.
And there's an even bigger reason to pay attention right now:
AWS recently launched Student Rewards.
Verified higher-education students who complete their Builder Center profile can unlock 12 months of premium AWS Skill Builder, including 900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation, and game-based learning. (builder.aws.comĀ )
So if you're a student and you've been thinking:
"Where do I even start learning AWS?"
This is a pretty good answer.
2. DON'T JUST WATCH TUTORIALS. BUILD.Ā

This is probably my favorite part.
Builder Center has AWS Workshops where you can follow practical, step-by-step exercises instead of just reading about a service.
And there's a particularly useful update here.
AWS introduced free sandbox environments for eligible workshops in July 2026.
That means you can use a pre-provisioned AWS environment to experiment without needing your own AWS account or credit card for those workshops.
Each sandbox provides up to 8 hours, with resources automatically cleaned up afterward. (aws.amazon.comĀ )
That's a big deal for someone who's scared of accidentally creating an expensive AWS resource while learning.
Learn ā Open a Workshop ā Get your hands dirty ā Break something ā Understand why it broke.
That's how cloud starts making sense.
3. KNOW WHAT AWS CAN DO IN YOUR REGION š
When you start building on AWS, you'll eventually wonder:
"Is this service or feature available in my Region?"
That's where AWS Capabilities by Region helps. You can check service and feature availability across AWS Regions before designing your project.
The tool currently covers 1,500+ services and features across 37 Regions.
You can also subscribe to availability notifications and get notified when a service or feature becomes available in a Region you're interested in.
You may not need it on day one, but it's a handy tool once you start building real applications.
4. JOIN A SPACEĀ

This is another feature I'd recommend exploring instead of staying in the "solo learner" mindset.
Builder Center has Spaces ā topic-focused communities where builders can discuss specific areas and connect with people interested in similar things.
Instead of simply consuming content, you can find people who are learning and building around the same technologies.
Don't underestimate this part.
Sometimes the fastest way to understand something isn't another tutorial.
It's finding someone who already struggled with the exact problem you're facing.
5. READ ARTICLES ā BUT THEN WRITE ONE
This is where Builder Center becomes interesting for your portfolio.
You don't have to be an AWS expert to contribute.
You can document:
- what you learned
- a project you built
- a problem you solved
- an AWS service you experimented with
- something that confused you
- a mistake you made and how you fixed it
You might think:
"Who would want to read something written by someone who's still learning?"
Probably other people who are also learning.
And explaining something is one of the best ways to discover whether you actually understand it.
So don't just consume Builder Center content.
Eventually, contribute to it.
6. AND YES ā THERE'S STILL THE WISHLIST š
The Wishlist is genuinely useful.
You can submit feature requests, vote on community ideas, and follow how your feedback influences AWS. (builder.aws.comĀ )
But I'd change the mindset from:
Login ā Vote ā Leave
to:
Login ā Learn ā Build ā Connect ā Contribute ā Vote
That's a much better way to use the platform.
š MY 7-DAY STARTER ROUTE
If I were completely new to AWS today, I wouldn't try to learn everything at once.
I'd give myself 7 days to explore, build, and get comfortable with the ecosystem.
Here's exactly how I'd approach it:
šļø DAY 1 ā SET UP YOUR BASE š§
ā Complete your Builder Center profile
ā Explore the Learn section
ā Check Student Rewards if you're eligible š
ā Explore the Learn section
ā Check Student Rewards if you're eligible š
Goal: Know where everything is before you start learning.
š DAY 2 ā PICK ONE THING
ā Choose one AWS topic that interests you
ā Start a beginner-friendly Workshop
ā Don't worry about understanding everything yet.
ā Start a beginner-friendly Workshop
ā Don't worry about understanding everything yet.
Goal: Go deep on one thing instead of skimming ten.
š ļø DAY 3 ā STOP READING. START BUILDING.
ā Use a sandbox where available
ā Follow along with the workshop
ā Actually deploy or build something
ā Follow along with the workshop
ā Actually deploy or build something
Goal: Turn "I understand it" into "I can do it."
š DAY 4 ā SEE WHAT OTHER BUILDERS ARE DOING
ā Join a relevant Space
ā Browse discussions
ā See what other builders are asking, building, and sharing
ā Browse discussions
ā See what other builders are asking, building, and sharing
Goal: Learn from people who are already doing it.
š” DAY 5 ā BUILD SOMETHING SMALL
ā Start a tiny project
ā Keep the scope simple
ā Focus on getting something working
ā Keep the scope simple
ā Focus on getting something working
Goal: Your first working project > your tenth tutorial.
āļø DAY 6 ā DOCUMENT THE JOURNEY
ā Write down what you learned
ā Note what confused you
ā Capture what you built and how you built it
ā Note what confused you
ā Capture what you built and how you built it
Goal: Turn your learning into something you can look back on ā and share.
š DAY 7 ā PUT IT OUT THERE
ā Publish what you learned
ā Start a discussion
ā Ask for feedback
ā Share your project with the community
ā Start a discussion
ā Ask for feedback
ā Share your project with the community
Goal: Don't just consume. Become a builder.
IF YOU'RE A STUDENT, THERE'S EVEN
MORE REASON TO STAY ACTIVE

š And this is where the timing gets interesting.
AWS Student Rewards gives verified students a way to turn their activity on Builder Center into something tangible. š
You can earn badges through activities like publishing articles, participating in discussions, commenting, creating or voting on Wishes, and maintaining activity streaks. š
And if you're already planning to explore Builder Center, you might as well understand how the rewards system works and how to make the most of it. š
