EarthSync: Building an AI-Powered Environmental Resource Management Platform
Introduction
Environmental challenges are not always caused by a lack of resources. Sometimes, the problem is that available resources and the people who need them are not connected effectively.
Surplus food, reusable materials, and other resources can go unused while communities face shortages. At the same time, information about environmental issues is often scattered across different channels.
This inspired me to develop EarthSync, an AI-powered environmental resource management platform designed to bring resource sharing and environmental issue reporting into one place.
The Problem We Are Addressing
Resource management often involves multiple people and organizations working independently. Without a centralized platform, discovering available resources, coordinating requests, and communicating environmental concerns can become difficult.
EarthSync aims to improve this process by providing a digital platform where users can list surplus resources, discover available resources, submit requests, and report environmental issues.
The broader goal is to encourage resource reuse, reduce avoidable waste, and make environmental coordination more accessible.
How EarthSync Works
EarthSync is designed around a centralized resource management workflow.
- Resource sharing: Users can list surplus resources for others to discover.
- Resource discovery: People who need resources can explore listings and submit requests.
- Environmental reporting: Users can report environmental concerns through the platform.
- Centralized dashboard: The interface brings important platform functions together.
- AI-assisted functionality: Google Gemini supports selected AI-related capabilities in the application.
These features are intended to support more coordinated and sustainable resource management.
Technology Stack and Architecture
I built EarthSync using a modern full-stack architecture.
- Frontend: React, TypeScript, and Vite.
- Backend: Node.js and Express.
- Database: PostgreSQL hosted on Neon.
- ORM: Prisma.
- AI integration: Google Gemini.
- Frontend hosting: AWS Amplify Hosting.
- Backend hosting: Render.
The frontend communicates with the backend through REST APIs. The backend handles application logic and database operations using Prisma.
The architecture separates the user interface, application logic, and data storage, making the system easier to maintain and extend.
Deploying EarthSync with AWS
One of my key implementation steps was deploying the frontend through AWS Amplify Hosting.
I connected Amplify to my GitHub repository to establish a deployment workflow that can build and publish frontend changes. The deployed frontend is available over HTTPS.
The backend runs separately on Render, and the PostgreSQL database is hosted on Neon. This means AWS Amplify is the AWS service used directly for frontend hosting, while the other components are independently hosted services.
Connecting these components helped me understand how environment variables, API endpoints, frontend builds, and independently deployed services work together.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
Building EarthSync involved more than writing application code. I also had to work through deployment configuration, frontend-to-backend connectivity, environment variables, database integration, and troubleshooting production issues.
These challenges helped me understand the importance of testing the complete application flow rather than checking the frontend and backend independently.
I also used AI-assisted development tools during development. They helped accelerate parts of the workflow, but reviewing code, testing functionality, and diagnosing errors remained important parts of the process.
What's Next?
EarthSync has room to grow through improved resource matching, more comprehensive environmental reporting workflows, stronger notifications, and better impact tracking.
Future improvements could also help users understand how their resource-sharing activities contribute to waste reduction and more responsible resource utilization.
Conclusion
EarthSync explores how full-stack development, AI-assisted functionality, and cloud hosting can contribute to a practical environmental challenge.
Building the project gave me valuable experience connecting frontend development, backend APIs, databases, AI integration, and deployment into one application.
My goal is to continue improving EarthSync and explore how technology can help communities manage resources more responsibly.
This project was developed as part of my participation in Environmental Hacks. The implementation and deployment details described above reflect the components used in the project.
