NASA Space Apps Challenge 2026: What It Is and How to Join
The NASA International Space Apps Challenge is a global hackathon where participants use NASA and partner space-agency data to solve real-world problems. The 2026 challenge takes place on November 14–15, 2026, with registration opening on August 26, 2026. Here is what the hackathon is, who can participate, and how to apply.
What Is the NASA Space Apps Challenge?
The NASA International Space Apps Challenge is an annual global hackathon organized by NASA in collaboration with international space-agency partners.
Unlike a traditional coding competition, Space Apps brings together people from many different backgrounds to develop solutions to challenges related to Earth, space, science and technology.
Participants can include:
- Software developers
- AI and machine-learning specialists
- Data analysts
- Engineers
- Cybersecurity and IT professionals
- Scientists and researchers
- UI/UX designers
- Students
- Entrepreneurs
- Artists and storytellers
You do not need to work for NASA or have a background in aerospace engineering to participate. NASA states that people of different ages, skill levels and professional backgrounds are welcome.
When Is the 2026 Hackathon?
The 2026 NASA Space Apps Challenge will take place on November 14–15, 2026.
Registration officially opens on August 26, 2026.
The challenge is held around the world through local events, while remote participation is also available.
Can You Participate Online?
Yes.
The 2026 NASA Space Apps Challenge is officially described as both a virtual and in-person event, meaning participants do not necessarily need to attend a physical hackathon location.
Participants who cannot or prefer not to attend a local event can use NASA Space Apps' virtual participation options, including the Universal Event.
This makes the competition accessible to participants around the world who want to collaborate remotely.
What Do Participants Build?
NASA publishes a collection of official challenges based on real problems and datasets.
Teams choose a challenge and develop a solution during the hackathon.
Depending on the challenge, a project could be:
- An AI or machine-learning model
- A website or mobile application
- A data-analysis platform
- An interactive dashboard
- A visualization of NASA data
- A scientific or engineering concept
- An Earth-observation solution
- A space-exploration concept
- An educational tool
- A creative storytelling or visualization project
Participants are encouraged to use NASA data and data provided by international Space Agency Partners when developing their solutions.
The goal is not simply to write the most code. A strong project combines a meaningful problem, relevant data, a practical solution and a clear presentation.
Do You Need a Team?
You can form your own team or join an existing one.
NASA Space Apps provides tools that allow registered participants to search for teams, see what skills teams are looking for and request to join them.
Participants can also create their own team and invite others to join. Team members participating together must be registered for the appropriate Space Apps event.
A good hackathon team may combine several skills, for example:
Developer — builds the application and backend.
AI/Data Specialist — works with datasets, analysis or machine-learning models.
Designer — develops the interface, visual identity and user experience.
Technical/IT Specialist — works on infrastructure, systems, APIs, cloud or cybersecurity.
Presenter/Researcher — develops the use case, research, documentation and final presentation.
Not every team needs every role. The most important factor is having complementary skills.
How to Apply for NASA Space Apps Challenge 2026
Registration opens on August 26, 2026.
Step 1 — Visit the Official Space Apps Website
Go to the official NASA International Space Apps Challenge website:
spaceappschallenge.org
Step 2 — Create an Account
Create your Space Apps participant account using a valid email address.
NASA already provides an account-creation page for participants joining the global hackathon.
Step 3 — Register for the 2026 Hackathon
Once registration opens, sign in and register as a participant in the 2026 NASA Space Apps Challenge.
Registration must be completed before participating in the event.
Step 4 — Select How You Want to Participate
Choose an available Local Event if you want to attend physically or virtually through a local organizer.
If an appropriate local event is not available, participants can use the online Universal Event option.
Step 5 — Find or Create a Team
After joining an event, you can:
- Create your own team
- Invite people you already know
- Search for teams seeking members
- Request to join an existing team
NASA's team system allows participants to connect based on the challenge and skills they are interested in.
Step 6 — Choose a Challenge
NASA releases official challenge statements covering different areas of space, Earth science, technology and data.
Your team selects one challenge and develops a solution around it.
Step 7 — Build During the Hackathon
During November 14–15, 2026, teams work on their solution, develop a prototype or concept, prepare supporting material and complete their project submission.
Step 8 — Submit Your Project
Teams submit their finished project through the NASA Space Apps platform according to the official submission requirements.
Eligible projects can progress from local or Universal Event judging toward the global judging stage.
Why Participate?
NASA Space Apps is more than a competition.
It provides an opportunity to:
- Work with real NASA datasets
- Build a portfolio project
- Develop AI, programming, design and data skills
- Meet developers, researchers and entrepreneurs from around the world
- Work on real scientific and technological problems
- Gain international hackathon experience
