Bringing Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to Apache Airflow
Integrate Amazon Bedrock AgentCore into Apache Airflow using native operators to create, invoke and manage production AI agents directly from your DAGs.
My Motivation
AI agents are quickly becoming part of production data platforms. As organizations adopt Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to deploy and manage those agents, integrating them into existing Apache Airflow pipelines should be as seamless as orchestrating any other AWS service.
However, until now, orchestrating AgentCore runtimes from Apache Airflow required custom code and bespoke integrations. Bringing AgentCore into the Apache Airflow AWS provider as a first-class integration allows data teams to manage AI agents using the same patterns, operators and operational model they already use across the rest of AWS services.
Native Amazon Bedrock AgentCore support in the Apache Airflow AWS provider makes this possible through dedicated hooks and operators, allowing teams to adopt AI agents without relying on custom integrations while preserving the familiar experience of the AWS provider.
A real-world use case
One of the workflows enabled by this integration is an Agentic Airflow pipeline for automated troubleshooting. When a DAG fails, Airflow invokes an AI agent running on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The agent analyzes task logs, inspects the relevant source code, identifies the most likely root cause, generates a Draft Pull Request with a proposed fix, and finally sends a summary to Slack for human review.
Instead of introducing a separate orchestration layer for AI agents, the entire workflow remains inside Apache Airflow. The AI agent becomes another step in the DAG, benefiting from the same scheduling, dependency management, retries, monitoring, and operational model already used across the rest of the data platform.
Native Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Operators
To support this integration, the Apache Airflow AWS provider introduces dedicated operators for creating, invoking, and deleting Amazon Bedrock AgentCore runtimes, together with the underlying hooks required to integrate AgentCore with Airflow’s provider architecture. The implementation also includes waiters, triggers, and deferrable execution, providing the same operational experience as the rest of the AWS provider.
