I was fortunate enough to receive the All Builders Welcome Grant last year, and honestly, I can say the impact it had on my life was far greater than I ever expected. It wasn't just about attending a conference, it was about becoming part of a global community of builders. I met incredible people from around the world, learned from AWS experts, explored technologies I had only read about, and came home with friendships, ideas, and motivation that continue to shape what I'm building today.

AWS re:Invent is the largest learning conference hosted by AWS, with 2,200+ learning opportunities, over 70% of which are interactive. Whether you're just getting started or already have experience with AWS, there are sessions ranging from foundational concepts to deep technical content, workshops, builders' sessions, hands-on labs, leadership talks, chalk talks, and much more. There is literally something for everyone.

So... What Exactly Is the AWS All Builders Welcome Grant?

Before I applied, I honestly thought the All Builders Welcome Grant was just another conference scholarship. After experiencing it myself, I realized it's much more than that.

The AWS All Builders Welcome Grant is an opportunity created to help people who have the passion to build but may not have the financial means to attend AWS re:Invent. The grant covers your conference pass, hotel accommodation, airfare, and gives you access to exclusive networking opportunities, community events, and a mentor who supports you before and throughout the conference.

What makes this program different is that AWS isn't just looking at your résumé or the number of certifications you have. They're looking for builders with potential—people who will take what they learn at re:Invent and use it to create something meaningful afterward.

I can honestly say that's exactly what happened to me. Attending re:Invent exposed me to a global community of builders, gave me confidence to take on bigger challenges, and influenced many of the projects and opportunities I've pursued since then. Looking back, I don't see it as just a grant to attend a conference, it was an investment in my journey.

If you're someone who loves building, enjoys learning, and wants to grow in technology but feels attending re:Invent is financially out of reach, this program is absolutely worth applying for.

What Is AWS re:Invent? And How Can It Shape Your Journey?

If you've never heard of AWS re:Invent before, think of it as much more than just a technology conference. It's AWS's biggest annual event, where builders, developers, students, researchers, startup founders, engineers, and industry leaders from all over the world come together to learn, build, and connect. Every year, AWS announces new services, AI innovations, and cloud technologies while hosting more than 2,200 technical sessions, workshops, builder sessions, chalk talks, hands-on labs, keynotes, networking events, and one of the largest technology expos in the world.,

But honestly, that's only half of what re:Invent is.

For me, re:Invent wasn't just about sitting in sessions. It was about meeting people who were building technologies, talking directly with AWS engineers and companies at the Expo, participating in challenges, attending networking events, and seeing how ideas become real products. Those conversations taught me things that I could never have learned from YouTube videos or documentation alone.

One thing I also realized is that everyone attends re:Invent differently. Some people come to learn a specific AWS service, some are looking for career opportunities, others want to network with startups, and many simply want to discover what's next in AI and cloud computing. That's why planning your week is so important.

Looking back, re:Invent gave me much more than technical knowledge. It expanded my perspective, introduced me to a global builder community, and gave me the confidence to pursue bigger projects after returning home. Sometimes, all it takes is being in the right environment with the right people to completely change the direction of your journey.

Who can apply?

One question I get asked a lot is, "Am I even eligible to apply?" Before I applied last year, I had the same question.

Here are the main eligibility requirements for the AWS All Builders Welcome Grant 2026:

You must be at least 21 years old.

You should be within your first five years in technology,

A university student actively preparing for a career in tech.

The program is designed for people who have faced barriers in pursuing opportunities in technology or whose participation would help support the program's mission of building a more diverse and accessible builder community.

If you've already received the AWS re:Invent ABW Grant, you aren't eligible to receive the same grant for re:Invent again.

The program is open to applicants from around the world. If you require a visa, make sure to plan ahead because you're responsible for obtaining it.

You don't need AWS certifications or years of professional experience to apply.

When I applied, I honestly thought certifications and experience would be the deciding factor. Looking back, I realized AWS cared much more about my story, my potential, and what I wanted to build than how many certifications I had.

  • Exclusive All Builders Welcome Lounge – A dedicated space for ABW grant recipients to work, relax, network with mentors and fellow builders, and, during my year, even receive a complimentary professional headshot for LinkedIn and portfolios.

Honestly, all of these benefits are amazing, but the biggest thing I gained it was the people I met, the confidence I built, and the motivation I came home with. Six months later, I still find myself using what I learned at re:Invent in my projects and sharing those experiences with others.

The Application Process: What to Expect

When I first opened the application, I expected it to be like most scholarship applications. It wasn't.
The application is designed to understand who you are as a builder, what you've done so far, and more importantly, what you plan to do after attending re:Invent.
The first part covers your basic information, your education, current role, location, and background. After that, you'll answer a few questions about your experience in technology and AWS. Don't worry if you're new to AWS or don't have years of industry experience. The program welcomes people at different stages of their journey.
The most important part of the application is the essay section. This is where AWS gets to know you beyond your resume.
My advice is simple: don't try to write what you think AWS wants to hear. Write your own story.
If you've built projects, talk about them.
If you've organized events, mentored others, participated in hackathons, contributed to your community, or taught yourself new skills, include those experiences. They all demonstrate initiative and a genuine passion for building.
One thing I learned while applying is that the reviewers aren't only looking at what you've already achieved, they're also looking at what you'll do with the opportunity. Think about how attending re:Invent will help you grow and how you'll bring that knowledge back to your university, workplace, startup, or community.
Finally, before submitting, read every question carefully. Each one asks something different, so avoid repeating the same answer with different wording. Use each response to show a different side of your journey.

What a Week at AWS re:Invent Really Feels Like

One thing I wish someone had told me before attending re:Invent is this: every single day is packed. You might think you'll have plenty of free time to explore Las Vegas, but once the conference starts, you'll realize there's always something happening. The days are long, you'll probably walk more than you've ever walked before, and by the end of the week you'll wonder where the time went.
Monday – Arrival & Getting Started
Most people arrive, collect their conference badge, and get familiar with the venues. This is also the perfect day to explore the community spaces, attend your first sessions, and join the Welcome Reception in the Expo. My advice? Don't stay in your hotel room, this is one of the easiest days to start meeting people.
Tuesday – The Conference Begins
The excitement really starts here with the Opening Keynote, followed by hundreds of technical sessions, workshops, hands-on labs, and the opening of the Expo. If it's your first re:Invent, prepare to spend hours exploring the Expo because it's much bigger than you expect.
Wednesday – Learn, Network & Explore
Wednesday continues with technical sessions, self-paced learning, community activities, networking receptions, and another opportunity to explore the Expo. If you missed anything on Tuesday, this is usually the best day to catch up.
Thursday – One Last Push
Thursday is still packed with sessions, workshops, and Expo activities, but it's also the day of AWS re:Play, one of the biggest celebrations of the entire week. Thousands of attendees come together to celebrate, network, enjoy live music, games, and simply have fun after days of learning.

There's More to re:Invent Than What's on the Schedule

One thing I quickly realized after arriving at re:Invent is that the official agenda is only part of the experience. Every day there are opportunities happening outside your registered sessions, and some of them ended up being the most memorable parts of my week.
Some examples include:
  • Startup and innovation competitions, including AI pitch competitions and builder showcases.
  • AWS customer research sessions, where you can share feedback directly with AWS teams. During my re:Invent, I was invited to participate in one of these sessions, had lunch with AWS researchers and other attendees, and received an Amazon gift card as a thank-you for participating.
  • Company-hosted networking events organized by AWS partners and technology companies.
  • Office tours and private events hosted by companies around Las Vegas.
  • After-hours networking events where you can meet builders, startup founders, AWS Heroes, Community Builders, and recruiters in a much more relaxed setting.
  • Expo challenges and interactive booths, where companies showcase their latest technologies through hands-on experiences.
  • Swag hunts and giveaways throughout the Expo.

Before You Leave...

I genuinely hope you apply. Just remember to submit your application before the deadline and be honest throughout the entire process. Every builder has a unique journey, and that's what makes your application meaningful

Writing this article reminded me why I wanted to apply in the first place.

Not because I wanted a free trip to Las Vegas.

Not because I wanted to attend another conference.

But because I wanted to learn from people who were building the future.

That opportunity changed me more than I expected.

Now that applications are open again, I hope someone reading this gets the same chance I had.

If you have any questions about the application or what it's like to attend AWS re:Invent through the All Builders Welcome Grant, feel free to reach out. I'll be happy to help in any way I can. I hope to see many of you at re:Invent.
