Building Lore and Abyss: A Streaming AI Dungeon Crawler with Next.js, DynamoDB, and Multi-Agent AI
What happens when you combine modern AI agents, real-time streaming, and classic text-based RPGs? You get Lore and Abyss—an AI-powered dark fantasy roguelike that generates immersive adventures while maintaining a persistent world state across every player decision. Rather than building another chatbot with a fantasy prompt, I wanted to create a true game engine that keeps track of inventory, health, locations, NPCs, and story progression while streaming narrative to the player in real time.
☁️ Built with AWS
Lore and Abyss leverages several AWS services to power a scalable, cloud-native AI gaming experience. Amazon DynamoDB serves as the persistent storage layer, efficiently managing player sessions, world state, inventories, and progression using a single-table design optimized for fast lookups and low-latency updates. The application integrates with a Bedrock-compatible AI API to orchestrate multiple specialized AI agents responsible for narration, memory, combat, tone, and world state management. Combined with a serverless architecture deployed on Vercel, AWS enables the game to deliver real-time streaming gameplay while maintaining persistent, reliable state across every player adventure.
