Building a Modern Marketplace with Vercel and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL: The Architecture Behind Local Loop
This article describes the application created using Vercel and AWS Database for the ongoing hackathon and how the integration between Vercel and AWS databases shine in this context.
Introduction
Modern web applications demand rapid development, global scalability, and reliable data persistence. While frontend platforms like Vercel excel at deploying performant Next.js applications, production workloads still require enterprise-grade databases capable of handling transactional data, relationships, and future growth.
This article demonstrates how we built Local Loop, a marketplace for discovering and booking authentic local experiences, by combining Vercel's developer experience with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL. The result is a serverless-first architecture that delivers an excellent developer workflow while leveraging AWS for durable, scalable data storage.
The Problem
Marketplace applications involve much more than displaying listings.
Every booking creates multiple relationships:
- Users
- Hosts
- Experiences
- Bookings
- Reviews
- Favorites
These entities require:
- ACID transactions
- Relational queries
- Data consistency
- Scalability
- High availability
While Vercel provides outstanding hosting for Next.js applications, pairing it with a managed relational database enables developers to build production-ready applications without managing database infrastructure.

The frontend and backend are deployed as a single Next.js application on Vercel. API Routes encapsulate business logic and communicate securely with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL over encrypted database connections.
Why Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL?
Marketplace platforms naturally fit a relational data model.
For Local Loop, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL offered several advantages:
- Fully managed database service
- PostgreSQL compatibility
- High availability
- Automatic backups
- Read scalability
- Strong transactional guarantees
- Minimal operational overhead
Instead of provisioning EC2 instances or managing PostgreSQL clusters manually, Aurora allowed us to focus entirely on application development.

Aurora PostgreSQL efficiently manages these relationships using foreign keys and relational queries, enabling features such as:
- Upcoming bookings
- Host dashboards
- Traveler history
- Experience ratings
- Popular destinations
Vercel + Aurora: A Powerful Combination
One of the biggest advantages of this architecture is the clear separation of responsibilities.
Vercel handles
- Global frontend hosting
- Serverless API execution
- Edge delivery
- Continuous deployment
- Preview deployments
Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL handles
- Persistent storage
- Transactions
- Relational queries
- Data integrity
- Backup and recovery
This architecture lets developers deploy frontend updates independently while relying on Aurora for production-grade database operations.
Request Flow
A booking request follows a simple sequence.
- A traveler selects an experience.
- The booking form submits a request to a Next.js API Route.
- The API validates the request.
- Business rules are applied.
- A transaction is executed against Aurora PostgreSQL.
- The booking confirmation is returned to the client.
Since bookings involve multiple related records, transactional consistency is essential. Aurora ensures that either the complete booking succeeds or no data is committed, preventing partial updates.
Benefits of Using Vercel with AWS Databases
During development we observed several advantages from this architecture.
Rapid Development
Vercel Preview Deployments enabled instant feedback for every code change, significantly accelerating UI iteration.
Enterprise-Grade Persistence
Aurora PostgreSQL provided production-quality storage without requiring manual database administration.
Scalability
As Local Loop grows, Aurora supports increasing workloads while Vercel automatically scales frontend traffic.
Security
Application traffic uses HTTPS, while database communication occurs over encrypted TLS connections. Credentials are managed through environment variables rather than embedded in application code.
Cost Efficiency
Developers only manage application logic while AWS handles backups, replication, and infrastructure maintenance.
Lessons Learned
Combining Vercel with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL provides an excellent developer experience without sacrificing reliability.
Several design decisions proved particularly valuable:
- Keeping business logic inside API Routes
- Designing a normalized relational schema early
- Using server-side rendering where appropriate
- Separating frontend concerns from database operations
- Leveraging managed AWS services instead of self-hosting infrastructure
This approach reduced operational complexity while providing a solid foundation for future growth.
Future Enhancements
The current architecture is designed to evolve.
Future improvements include:
- Amazon S3 for experience image storage
- Amazon CloudFront for global asset delivery
- Amazon Cognito for authentication
- Amazon EventBridge for asynchronous booking events
- Amazon SES for booking confirmation emails
- Amazon ElastiCache for high-performance caching
- Amazon OpenSearch for full-text experience search
- Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring and observability
These services can be added incrementally without changing the application's overall architecture.
Conclusion
Local Loop demonstrates that developers don't have to choose between frontend productivity and backend robustness. By pairing Vercel's modern deployment platform with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, we built a scalable marketplace capable of supporting real-world booking workflows while maintaining an efficient development experience.
For teams building SaaS platforms, marketplaces, booking systems, or other transaction-heavy applications, integrating Vercel with AWS managed databases offers a practical architecture that balances developer velocity with production reliability.
