Building My First AI Agent with Amazon Nova and Strands SDK

Introduction

As part of the AWS Nova Month Challenge, I built an AI agent using Amazon Nova and the Strands SDK. This project helped me understand how to create intelligent applications that can process user requests and generate responses using AWS AI services.

Project Overview

The objective of this project was to build an AI agent capable of interacting with users through natural language. I implemented the solution using Python and integrated Amazon Nova with the Strands SDK.

Technologies Used

  • Amazon Nova
  • AWS Bedrock
  • Strands SDK
  • Python
  • Git
  • GitHub

Features

  • Accepts user prompts
  • Generates AI-powered responses
  • Uses Amazon Nova foundation models
  • Simple command-line interface
  • Easy to extend with additional tools

Implementation Steps

  1. Installed Python and required dependencies.
  2. Configured AWS CLI with my AWS credentials.
  3. Set up access to Amazon Bedrock.
  4. Installed the Strands SDK.
  5. Developed the AI agent in Python.
  6. Tested the application locally.
  7. Uploaded the completed project to GitHub.

Challenges Faced

During development, I encountered issues related to Python virtual environments, AWS credentials, and Amazon Bedrock permissions. After troubleshooting and configuring the environment correctly, the application worked successfully.

What I Learned

This project improved my understanding of:
  • Amazon Nova foundation models
  • AWS Bedrock
  • Building AI agents with Strands SDK
  • AWS authentication
  • Python project structure
  • Git and GitHub workflow
