Building AWS VPC: A Beginner Friendly Hands On Guide.
In this article, I’ll walk you through one of my recent hands-on AWS projects where I built a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) from scratch. Whether you’re just starting your cloud journey or looking to reinforce your AWS networking basics, this is a great foundational project.
What I Built
This project was all about creating and understanding the core components of AWS networking. Here’s what I did step by step:

- Created a VPC
I started by creating my own Virtual Private Cloud, which is like building my own private space in AWS a secure area where I can launch and manage AWS resources. - Configured Subnets
I added a public subnet, which allows certain resources (like EC2 instances) to be accessible from the internet. - Set Up an Internet Gateway
To allow internet access for the public subnet, I created and attached an Internet Gateway to my VPC. - Created Route Tables
I updated the route tables to make sure the subnet can talk to the internet. - Explored CIDR Blocks
I learned how CIDR blocks work and how they define the IP range inside the VPC. I used blocks like/16,/24, and learned how they affect the number of IP addresses.
🏀 Explaining VPC with Basketball (Yep, Really!)
To make things easier to understand, I used a basketball analogy:
- The VPC is like the stadium your private space to run your plays.
- A Subnet is a section of the court (maybe the half-court) where certain players operate.
- The Internet Gateway is like the stadium doors you need it open for your team to get in or out (internet access).
- Route Tables are like the playbook they decide where traffic goes.
This analogy really helped me explain the concepts to non-technical friends, and I’ll keep refining my skills in breaking down technical stuff in simpler ways.
What I Learned
- The difference between public and private subnets.
- Why understanding IP addressing is important (CIDR, IPv4).
- The role of Internet Gateways in enabling outbound traffic.
- How IAM permissions affect what you can and cannot do (I ran into access issues and learned how to fix them).
- How availability zones ensure high availability and fault tolerance.
