A few months ago I built an MVP entirely on Replit. It was perfect for getting something working quickly, but once I started preparing for real users, I realized I wanted more control over hosting, databases, scaling, monitoring, and deployments.
I assumed the migration would just be "download the code, deploy somewhere else." It wasn't.
The biggest surprise was how many things Replit handles for you behind the scenes. Once you move to your own cloud provider, you suddenly have to configure everything yourself environment variables, build commands, startup scripts, databases, storage, domains, SSL, logging, and deployment pipelines.
Replit's documentation focuses on publishing within its own platform rather than migrating away, so you're mostly piecing together the process yourself.
Here are the lessons that saved me a lot of time:
- Push everything to GitHub first instead of deploying directly from a ZIP.
- Separate your database before touching the application code.
- Test locally until the app behaves exactly like it did on Replit.
- Remove any Replit-specific configuration instead of trying to work around it.
- Store secrets properly don't hardcode anything.
- Add logging before going live. It'll save hours of debugging later.
- If possible, deploy to a staging environment before switching production traffic.
I ended up looking through Reddit threads, official docs, and a handful of migration write-ups because no single resource covered everything. Interestingly, the most useful guides weren't just step-by-step deployment tutorials they also explained why certain Replit configurations break when moving to AWS, Render, Railway, DigitalOcean, or similar providers.
Community discussions echoed the same advice: keep Replit for development if you like it, but separate production hosting and your database for better scalability and control.
If you're planning the same move, don't just search for "how to deploy on AWS" or "how to host on Render." Search specifically for "Migrate Replit Hosting to Cloud" or "Replit to Cloud migration" the results are much more relevant because they cover the Replit-specific issues you'll run into before deployment.
