From Content to Connection: Lessons in Storytelling and Public Speaking from AWS New Voices
AWS New Voices 2026 transformed the way I approach technical presentations. Through five weeks of learning and collaboration, I discovered the power of audience-first communication, storytelling, strong opening hooks, and memorable takeaways. The program taught me that great talks are not just about sharing knowledge but about creating meaningful connections. In this blog, I share the lessons that reshaped my public speaking journey and how they continue to influence every presentation I deliver.
When I joined the AWS New Voices 2026 program, I thought I already had a fair amount of speaking experience. I had delivered technical trainings, spoken at community events, and even presented at AWS Summit Bengaluru. However, AWS New Voices taught me that great speaking is not just about sharing knowledge—it's about creating an experience that your audience remembers long after your session ends.
Over five weeks, I participated in early morning sessions that started at 4:30 AM in my time zone. Waking up before dawn was not always easy, but every session was worth it. The program challenged me to rethink how I prepare, deliver, and connect with an audience.
The Biggest Lesson: Know Your Audience
One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that the audience is the most important part of any presentation.
As speakers, we often focus on our content, our demos, and our slides. AWS New Voices helped me realize that before preparing a talk, I should first understand who will be listening.
Questions such as:
- Who is my audience?
- What is their background?
- Why are they attending this session?
- What problem are they trying to solve?
These questions can completely change how a talk is structured and delivered.
I learned that a successful presentation is not about what the speaker wants to say. It is about what the audience needs to hear.
Starting Strong with a Hook
Another powerful lesson was learning how to start a presentation.
Many technical talks begin with introductions and agenda slides. Through AWS New Voices, I learned the importance of opening with a strong hook—something that immediately captures attention and creates curiosity.
Whether it is a surprising fact, a relatable challenge, a question, or a personal story, the first few moments determine whether your audience will stay engaged.
I now spend much more time thinking about how to start a talk than I did before.
Storytelling Makes Technical Content Memorable
As technology professionals, we often focus on technical accuracy. While that is important, AWS New Voices showed me how storytelling can make technical content far more engaging and memorable.
Stories create emotional connections. They help audiences relate to concepts and remember key messages.
I learned techniques for:
- Structuring a narrative
- Building curiosity
- Connecting technical concepts with real-world experiences
- Ending with meaningful takeaways
The goal is not simply to share information but to create an experience that people remember.
Give the Audience Something They Can Do Immediately
One of my favorite learnings from the program was the importance of actionable takeaways.
At the end of a presentation, the audience should leave with something practical they can implement right away.
Sometimes these actions can be simple:
- Try a new AWS service
- Build a small proof of concept
- Explore a learning resource
- Apply a new communication technique
Small actions often create the biggest impact because they help transform learning into practice.
Less Text, More Impact
The program also helped me rethink slide design.
Like many technical speakers, I used to put a lot of information on slides. AWS New Voices reinforced the idea that slides should support the speaker—not replace the speaker.
I learned techniques to:
- Reduce text
- Use visuals effectively
- Highlight key messages
- Keep slides clean and focused
Simple slides make it easier for audiences to focus on the story being told rather than reading paragraphs of text.
Learning Through Global Collaboration
One of the most rewarding aspects of AWS New Voices was meeting people from around the world.
The breakout room activities gave us opportunities to collaborate, practice, and learn from one another. Working with participants from different countries, cultures, and professional backgrounds broadened my perspective and helped me appreciate the diversity of the global AWS community.
These interactions reminded me that learning often happens not only from instructors but also from peers.
AWS Summit Bengaluru Through a New Lens
Before joining AWS New Voices, I had the opportunity to speak at AWS Summit Bengaluru in the Developer Lounge. It was one of the highlights of my speaking journey and a memorable experience to share technical knowledge with the AWS community.

AWS Summit Bengaluru
I enjoyed presenting technical content, answering questions from attendees, and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
At the time, I focused primarily on delivering valuable technical content and ensuring that the audience learned something useful from the session. However, after participating in AWS New Voices, I found myself reflecting on that experience from a completely different perspective.
The program taught me that great presentations are not only about the content being delivered—they are about the connection being created with the audience. It encouraged me to think more deeply about questions such as: Who is my audience? What are they hoping to learn? What will they remember after the session ends? What action will they take after leaving the room?
AWS Summit Bengaluru gave me the opportunity to speak. AWS New Voices taught me how to create a stronger connection with the audience and make every speaking opportunity more impactful.
Final Thoughts
AWS New Voices was much more than a public speaking program. It was a masterclass in communication, storytelling, audience engagement, and personal growth.
The program taught me that effective speakers do more than deliver information. They connect, inspire, and create memorable experiences.
My biggest takeaway is simple:
Your audience is your greatest asset as a speaker.
When you understand your audience, tell meaningful stories, simplify your message, and provide actionable takeaways, your presentation becomes more than a talk—it becomes an experience that people remember.
I am grateful to the AWS New Voices team, mentors, and fellow participants for making this journey such a valuable learning experience. The lessons I gained will continue to influence every presentation, workshop, and keynote I deliver in the future.
