Day 15 Of Cloud with AWS: Creating an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from an Existing EC2 Instance in AWS
#100DaysOfCloud challenge using AWS
Objective
The objective of this task is to create an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from an existing EC2 instance named datacenter-ec2. The AMI should be named datacenter-ec2-ami and must reach the Available state before the task is considered complete.
Steps Followed
Step 1: Open the EC2 Console
- Sign in to the AWS Management Console.
- Select the desired region.
- Navigate to EC2 Dashboard.
Step 2: Locate the Source Instance
- In the left navigation pane, select Instances.
- Search for the instance named datacenter-ec2.
- Select the instance.
Step 3: Create an AMI
- Click Actions.
- Navigate to:
Actions → Image and templates → Create image - Enter the following details:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Image Name | datacenter-ec2-ami |
| Description | Optional |
- Leave the default storage configuration unchanged.
- Click Create image.
Step 4: Monitor AMI Creation
- Navigate to EC2 → AMIs.
- Search for datacenter-ec2-ami.
- Initially, the AMI status will show Pending.
- Wait until the state changes to Available.
Step 5: Verify the AMI
Confirm the following:
- AMI Name: datacenter-ec2-ami
- State: Available
Once verified, the task is successfully completed.
What is an AMI?
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a preconfigured template used to launch Amazon EC2 instances.
An AMI contains:
- Operating System (Linux, Windows, etc.)
- Application configurations
- Installed software packages
- System settings
- EBS volume snapshots
Think of an AMI as a "golden image" or a reusable blueprint for creating identical EC2 instances.
Why is an AMI Required?
Creating an AMI provides several operational benefits:
1. Rapid Instance Deployment
Instead of manually configuring new servers, you can launch fully configured instances directly from an AMI.
2. Backup and Recovery
An AMI serves as a backup of an EC2 instance's configuration and attached storage snapshots, making disaster recovery easier.
3. Standardization
Organizations can maintain consistent server configurations across development, testing, and production environments.
4. Scalability
When traffic increases, additional EC2 instances can be launched quickly from the same AMI, ensuring identical configurations.
5. Migration and Replication
AMIs simplify the process of replicating workloads across environments or regions.
How AMIs Help in Real-World Scenarios
Consider a web server hosting a business application:
- The operating system is installed.
- Application dependencies are configured.
- Security settings are applied.
- Monitoring agents are installed.
Instead of repeating these steps for every new server, an AMI can be created from the configured instance. Future instances launched from this AMI will inherit the exact same setup, significantly reducing deployment time and configuration errors.
