Building AI Agents Using Amazon Nova Pro and Strands SDK

This article covers my journey of building AI agents using Amazon Nova Pro and the Strands SDK. Through five hands-on challenges, I learned how to create intelligent agents with tools, memory, and external integrations using AWS services.

Exploring Agentic AI with Amazon Nova Pro and Strands SDK

Overview

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving from simple chatbots to intelligent agents capable of performing tasks, using external tools, and maintaining context over time. As part of the AWS User Group Madurai Nova Month Challenge, I explored these concepts through a series of practical exercises using Amazon Nova Pro and the Strands SDK.
Each challenge introduced a new capability, gradually transforming a basic conversational model into a more advanced and capable AI agent.

Getting Started with AI Agents

The journey began with creating a simple AI agent. This helped me understand the foundation of agent-based systems and how they process user input to generate meaningful responses. Setting up the environment and interacting with the language model provided a clear understanding of the basic agent workflow.
Through this exercise, I became familiar with the core components required to build and run an AI agent.

Expanding Agent Capabilities with Tools

Once the basic agent was functional, the next step was to enhance its abilities through tools. By integrating utilities such as a calculator, weather service, and age calculator, the agent was able to perform tasks beyond text generation.
This challenge demonstrated how AI agents can recognize when additional information or computation is required and automatically invoke the appropriate tool to complete a task. It also introduced me to creating custom tools and connecting external APIs to an agent's workflow.

Making Conversations Context-Aware

A major limitation of simple AI systems is their inability to remember previous interactions. To address this, the third challenge focused on implementing memory.
By adding memory capabilities, the agent could retain important information and use it in future conversations. This made interactions more natural and personalized, while also highlighting the importance of context management in AI applications.
The challenge provided valuable insight into how intelligent systems maintain continuity and improve user experiences through stored knowledge.

Integrating Multiple Features into a Single Agent

The fourth challenge brought together everything learned in the earlier exercises. The agent could now respond intelligently, utilize tools whenever necessary, and remember relevant information from previous interactions.
Building this integrated solution helped me understand how different agent components work together and how complete AI workflows are designed. It also demonstrated how powerful an AI assistant can become when multiple capabilities are combined effectively.

Connecting Agents to External Resources with MCP

The final challenge introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a framework that allows AI agents to interact with external systems and information sources.
Using MCP, I built an agent capable of accessing AWS documentation and utilizing resources beyond its built-in knowledge. This experience showed how modern AI agents can be extended to interact with real-world services, making them more dynamic and useful in practical scenarios.
The challenge also provided a deeper understanding of how external integrations can significantly expand an agent's capabilities.

Key Learnings from the Challenge

Throughout the workshop, I gained experience in:
  • Building AI agents using Amazon Nova Pro and the Strands SDK
  • Creating and integrating custom tools
  • Connecting agents to external APIs and services
  • Implementing memory for context-aware interactions
  • Designing complete agent workflows
  • Understanding and applying Model Context Protocol (MCP)
  • Extending agent functionality through AWS technologies

Final Thoughts

The AWS User Group Madurai Nova Month Challenge provided a structured and practical introduction to agentic AI development. Rather than focusing only on theory, the workshop emphasized hands-on learning, allowing me to experiment with real implementations and understand how intelligent agents are built.
By progressing from a simple conversational agent to an MCP-enabled intelligent assistant, I gained a stronger understanding of modern AI architectures and the role AWS services play in building scalable AI solutions. This experience has encouraged me to continue exploring advanced AI technologies and their applications in solving real-world problems.
