What is Termination Protection?

Termination protection prevents an EC2 instance from being accidentally deleted.
When enabled:
  • The instance cannot be terminated from Console, CLI, or API.
  • It protects important workloads from accidental removal.
It does NOT prevent:
  • Stopping the instance
  • Rebooting the instance
  • Modifying the instance
AWS commonly enables it for:
  • Production servers
  • Critical databases
  • Long-running applications
  • Important testing environments
  • Shared infrastructure instances
