Building AI Agents with AWS Strands SDK - April Nova Month
In this project, I built multiple AI agents using the AWS Strands SDK, exploring tool integration, memory management, streaming responses, and MCP-powered capabilities. Through hands-on challenges, I gained practical experience in developing intelligent agents with Amazon Nova models and AWS technologies.
Over the past few weeks, I participated in Nova Month – AI Strands, a hands-on learning program focused on building AI agents using the AWS Strands SDK and Amazon Nova models. The challenges were designed to gradually introduce core agent concepts, from simple conversations to memory systems and MCP integrations.
Challenge 1: My First AI Agent
The journey started with creating a basic AI agent. I learned how to set up the Strands SDK, connect a model, and run conversations. It was a simple challenge, but it helped me understand how agents process user input and generate responses.
Challenge 2: Adding Tools
Next, I integrated tools into the agent. This allowed it to perform tasks like calculations and other actions instead of just generating text. It was interesting to see how agents can decide when to use a tool based on a user's request.
Challenge 3: Memory
In this challenge, I implemented a memory system so the agent could remember information between conversations. This made interactions feel much more personalized and highlighted the importance of context in AI applications.
Challenge 4: Building a Complete Agent
This challenge brought everything together. I combined memory, tools, and conversational capabilities into a single assistant that could handle weather queries, age calculations, and user preferences. It gave me a better understanding of how real-world AI assistants are structured.
Challenge 5: Exploring MCP
The final challenge introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP). I learned how agents can connect with external systems and services through a standardized approach, making them far more capable and extensible.
What I Learned
Beyond the technical concepts, I also faced and solved several practical issues involving Python environments, package dependencies, PowerShell execution policies, and GitHub configuration. Working through these problems improved my troubleshooting skills and gave me a better understanding of the development workflow.
Final Thoughts
Nova Month was a great learning experience that helped me move from understanding AI agents in theory to actually building them. It gave me hands-on exposure to agent development, tool integration, memory systems, and MCP-powered workflows.
I'm excited to continue exploring Agentic AI and apply these concepts to future projects.
