Building AI Agents with AWS Strands SDK: My Skill Sprint Journey

In this project, I built multiple AI agents using the AWS Strands SDK, exploring tool integration, memory management, streaming responses, and MCP-powered capabilities. Through hands-on challenges, I gained practical experience in developing intelligent agents with Amazon Nova models and AWS technologies.

Building AI Agents with AWS Strands SDK: My Skill Sprint Journey

Introduction

I recently completed the AWS User Group Madurai Builders Skill Sprint on Strands Agents. The workshop introduced me to the fundamentals of building AI agents using the AWS Strands SDK and Amazon Nova models.
Throughout the sprint, I explored agent creation, tool integration, memory systems, and MCP-powered agents.

Challenge 1: Building My First Agent

The first challenge focused on creating a simple AI agent using the Strands SDK. I learned how to initialize an agent, configure the environment, and run my first interaction successfully.

Key Learning

  • Agent initialization
  • Model configuration
  • Running AI conversations

Challenge 2: Working with Tools

In the second challenge, I integrated tools into the agent. This allowed the agent to perform tasks such as calculations and external operations beyond standard text generation.

Key Learning

  • Tool integration
  • Function calling
  • Extending agent capabilities

Challenge 3: Adding Memory

The third challenge focused on memory. I implemented a memory system that allowed the agent to remember user information and retrieve it later during conversations.

Key Learning

  • Persistent memory concepts
  • User preference storage
  • Context retention

Challenge 4: Building a Full Agent

This challenge combined tools, memory, and conversational capabilities into a single AI assistant.

Features

  • Weather tool
  • Age calculation tool
  • User memory
  • Interactive conversations

Key Learning

  • Multi-tool orchestration
  • Agent architecture
  • End-to-end AI workflows

Challenge 5: MCP-Powered Agent

For the final challenge, I explored Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration and connected external capabilities to the agent.

Key Learning

  • MCP architecture
  • External tool ecosystems
  • Advanced agent design

Challenges Faced

During implementation I encountered:
  • Python environment issues
  • PowerShell execution policy restrictions
  • Package dependency conflicts
  • GitHub remote configuration errors
Resolving these issues improved my understanding of Python environments, Git workflows, and agent development practices.

Conclusion

This sprint provided hands-on experience with modern AI agent development using AWS Strands SDK. I gained practical knowledge of agent creation, tool integration, memory systems, and MCP-powered architectures.
I look forward to building more advanced AI applications using these concepts in future projects.
