Building SpeakSmart: A Real-Time AI Speaking Coach Using Amazon Nova Sonic, LiveKit, and AWS

SpeakSmart is a real-time AI communication coach for engineers built using Amazon Nova Sonic, LiveKit, and AWS Amplify. The system listens to spoken technical explanations and provides structured feedback on clarity, pacing, logical structure, and filler words. By combining WebRTC audio streaming with Amazon Nova’s conversational AI capabilities, SpeakSmart demonstrates how developers can build interactive voice-driven applications that help engineers communicate complex technical concepts more effectively.

Building SpeakSmart: A Real-Time AI Communication Coach with Amazon Nova Sonic

One thing I’ve noticed over the years working with engineers is that we often understand complex systems really well, but explaining them clearly out loud can be surprisingly difficult. Whether it’s a design review, a technical interview, or a conference talk, translating deep technical thinking into simple explanations takes practice.
That observation led me to build SpeakSmart, a small experiment during a hackathon to explore how AI could help engineers practice communication.
SpeakSmart acts like an AI speaking coach. You explain a technical concept out loud — something like Kubernetes, distributed systems, or machine learning pipelines — and the system listens and gives feedback on how clearly the idea was explained.
The feedback focuses on things that matter in real conversations: how structured the explanation was, whether the pacing felt natural, and whether filler words made the explanation harder to follow.

What the Experience Feels Like

The interaction is intentionally simple.
You open the application, start a speaking session, and explain a concept just as you would in a technical conversation. The AI listens and then returns feedback that looks something like this:
Clarity: 7/10
Structure: 6/10
Pacing: Good
Suggestion: try using a simple analogy when describing how Kubernetes services connect pods.
The idea isn’t to judge the speaker but to create a quick feedback loop so engineers can practice explaining ideas more clearly.

How the System Works

Under the hood, SpeakSmart connects several pieces of technology to enable real-time voice interaction.
A React web application provides the interface where users start a speaking session. The frontend is hosted on AWS Amplify, which makes it easy to deploy a scalable web app using S3 and CloudFront.
When a user begins speaking, their microphone audio is streamed through LiveKit, which handles real-time WebRTC communication between the browser and the backend agent.
The audio is then processed by an AI agent powered by Amazon Nova Sonic through Amazon Bedrock. Nova Sonic analyzes the spoken explanation and generates feedback focused on clarity and structure.
The results are returned to the UI as a simple communication scorecard so the user can immediately see how their explanation performed.

Why I Built This

Most AI tools today focus on generating answers. What interested me here was something slightly different — using AI to help people improve a skill.
For engineers, communication is often the bridge between a good idea and a successful product. The ability to explain complex systems clearly can influence hiring decisions, technical alignment, and collaboration across teams.
By combining real-time voice streaming with Amazon Nova Sonic, SpeakSmart explores how AI can support that process by acting more like a coach than a chatbot.

Where This Could Go Next

This project started as a hackathon prototype, but there are several directions it could evolve.
Real-time filler word detection could highlight moments when explanations become less clear. Visual speaking analytics could show how communication improves across multiple practice sessions. The system could even support interview preparation by simulating technical explanation scenarios.
Ultimately the goal would be to create a tool that helps engineers become more confident communicators when explaining complex ideas.

Closing Thoughts

Building SpeakSmart was a small experiment in combining real-time voice interaction, conversational AI, and cloud infrastructure to create a learning tool rather than just another chat interface.
Using Amazon Nova Sonic alongside LiveKit and AWS Amplify made it possible to build an interactive system where AI listens, understands context, and responds quickly enough to feel like a real conversation.
Sometimes the most valuable thing AI can do isn’t replacing a task — it’s helping people do it better.
