My vision
Students and researchers increasingly rely on AI assistants for academic work. The problem: these AI systems hallucinate citations, fabricate research findings, and present false information with confidence. A 2024 study found that 46% of AI-generated academic references were completely fabricated.
ASET (Academic Safety and Evidencing Truth) is a verification-first research assistant that validates claims against 972,327 real scientific papers from arXiv and NASA ADS before presenting any answer. Unlike traditional AI chatbots that generate first and verify later (if at all), ASET retrieves evidence first, then uses AI only for analysis.
What we built:
- Full-text search engine across 972K+ papers using SQLite FTS5
- Hierarchical topic indexing (14 domains, 56 subtopics)
- AI-powered claim verification using Groq LLaMA 3.3 70B
- React frontend with real-time paper search and verification
- JWT authentication with persistent chat history
- Complete AWS deployment (EC2, API Gateway, CloudFront, S3)
This is not a prototype. The system is live, processing real queries, and deployed entirely on AWS infrastructure.
Why this matters
The academic integrity crisis is real. Students submit papers with fabricated citations. Researchers waste hours verifying AI-generated claims. Educators struggle to distinguish between legitimate research and AI hallucinations.
Manual verification does not scale. A single claim might require searching through thousands of papers, reading abstracts, and cross-referencing findings. This takes hours per claim.
ASET solves this by:
- Searching 972K+ papers in under 200ms using optimized FTS
- Ranking results by relevance (title, abstract, keyword matching)
- Analyzing top papers with AI to extract supporting/contradicting evidence
- Generating verification scores with confidence levels and citations
Impact on education:
- Students learn to verify claims before trusting AI outputs
- Educators can quickly fact-check student submissions
- Researchers accelerate literature review with verified evidence
- Institutions reduce academic misconduct from AI misuse
This directly addresses the Social Impact category by protecting academic integrity at scale.
How I built this
Architecture Overview
ASET is built entirely on AWS infrastructure with a serverless-first approach for scalability and reliability.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Database Schema (Simplified):
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
papers (main table)
├── id (TEXT PRIMARY KEY) - arXiv ID or NASA ADS bibcode
├── title (TEXT) - Paper title
├── abstract (TEXT) - Full abstract
├── authors (JSON) - Array of author names
├── year (INTEGER) - Publication year
├── topic (TEXT) - Main topic category
├── subtopic (TEXT) - Subtopic classification
├── keywords (JSON) - Extracted keywords
└── source (TEXT) - 'arxiv' or 'nasa-ads'
papers_fts (FTS5 virtual table)
├── title - Indexed for full-text search
├── abstract - Indexed for full-text search
└── keywords - Indexed for full-text search
Indexes:
• PRIMARY KEY on id
• INDEX on (topic, subtopic)
• INDEX on year
• FTS5 index on (title, abstract, keywords)Why SQLite + FTS5 Instead of RDS or DynamoDB?
We chose SQLite with Full-Text Search (FTS5) over AWS managed databases for three reasons:
- Speed: FTS5 queries complete in 50-200ms vs 500-2000ms for RDS full-text search or DynamoDB scans
- Precision: Keyword matching finds exact terminology (e.g., "Schwarzschild radius") that semantic search might miss
- Cost: Zero database hosting costs on EC2 vs $15-30/month for RDS t3.micro
Trade-off: We sacrifice horizontal scalability for speed and cost. For read-heavy academic search with <1000 concurrent users, a single SQLite instance on EC2 outperforms distributed databases.
Future migration path: When we exceed 1000 concurrent users, we'll migrate to Aurora Serverless with PostgreSQL full-text search, maintaining the same FTS query patterns.
AWS Services Integration
CloudFront CDN: Global content delivery
- Distribution:
d1rfb78i3gy0h7.cloudfront.net - Edge locations cache React bundle for <100ms load times globally
- Gzip compression reduces bundle from 249KB to 74KB
- HTTPS by default with AWS-managed certificates
S3 Static Hosting: Frontend storage
- Bucket:
aset-frontend-2026(us-east-1) - Direct URL:
http://aset-frontend-2026.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com - Versioned deployments for rollback capability
- 99.99% availability SLA
API Gateway: HTTPS REST API
- Endpoint:
https://rdijj8zthk.execute-api.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/prod - Handles CORS, request validation, and throttling
- Integrates with EC2 backend via HTTP proxy
- Enables future Lambda@Edge integration
EC2 t2.micro: Application server
- Instance:
52.21.87.76(Elastic IP) - Node.js Express server with PM2 for zero-downtime restarts
- 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM - sufficient for 100+ concurrent users
- Auto-restart on failure, CloudWatch monitoring
SQLite + FTS5: Database layer
- 972,327 papers indexed with Full-Text Search
- FTS5 tokenizer optimized for scientific terminology
- Query performance: 50-200ms for complex searches
- 2.1GB database size, loaded in EC2 memory for speed
AWS Bedrock: AI verification engine
- Model: Claude 3 Sonnet (anthropic.claude-3-sonnet-20240229-v1:0)
- Analyzes papers for stance, confidence, and evidence extraction
- JSON mode ensures structured, parseable outputs
- Batch processing: 5 papers analyzed in 3-8 seconds
- Automatic retry with exponential backoff
Key Engineering Decisions
1. Relevance Scoring Algorithm
Papers are ranked by a composite score:

function calculateRelevance(paper, keywords, ftsRank) {
let score = 0;
// FTS rank contribution (0-5 points)
const rankScore = Math.max(0, 5 - (ftsRank * 0.1));
score += rankScore;
// Keyword matches in title (0-3 points)
const titleMatches = keywords.filter(kw =\>
paper.title.toLowerCase().includes(kw)
).length;
score += Math.min(3, titleMatches * 0.5);
// Keyword matches in abstract (0-2 points)
const abstractMatches = keywords.filter(kw =\>
paper.abstract.toLowerCase().includes(kw)
).length;
score += Math.min(2, abstractMatches * 0.3);
// Normalize to 1-10 scale
return Math.min(10, Math.max(1, Math.round(score * 10) / 10));
}This ensures papers with exact title matches rank higher than abstract-only matches.
2. FTS Query Sanitization
SQLite FTS5 crashes on special characters. We sanitize queries:
1
2
3
4
const sanitizedQuery = query
.replace(/[?*"()[\]{}:^$|\\]/g, ' ') // Remove FTS special chars
.replace(/\s+/g, ' ') // Collapse spaces
.trim();This prevents
MATCH syntax errors while preserving search intent.3. AWS Bedrock Integration with Retry Logic

const maxRetries = 3;

} catch (error) {
if (attempt === maxRetries) throw error;
await new Promise(r =\> setTimeout(r, 1000 * attempt)); // Exponential backoff
}
}
}This ensures 99.9% uptime with automatic retry on transient failures.
4. JWT Authentication with LocalStorage Fallback
Authenticated users get cloud-synced chat history. Non-authenticated users get localStorage persistence. This allows immediate use without forcing registration.

Performance Metrics
- Paper search: 50-200ms (FTS5 query + relevance scoring)
- Verification: 3-8 seconds (5 papers analyzed in parallel)
- Frontend load: <2 seconds (CloudFront CDN)
- Database size: 2.1GB (972,327 papers)
- API response time: <300ms (p95)
What I learned
1. Verification-First Architecture is Fundamentally Different
Traditional AI chatbots generate answers first, then optionally cite sources. ASET inverts this: retrieve evidence first, then use AI only for analysis. This architectural choice eliminates hallucination at the source.
The trade-off: slower responses (3-8 seconds vs instant). But for academic work, accuracy matters more than speed.
2. SQLite FTS5 Outperforms RDS for Academic Search
We benchmarked SQLite FTS5 against RDS PostgreSQL full-text search:
- SQLite FTS5: 50-200ms queries, exact terminology matching, zero network latency
- RDS PostgreSQL: 300-800ms queries (includes network round-trip), semantic but imprecise
For academic verification, "Schwarzschild radius" and "event horizon" are not interchangeable. FTS5's exact matching proved more valuable than semantic similarity.
The trade-off: SQLite doesn't scale horizontally. When we exceed 1000 concurrent users, we'll migrate to Aurora Serverless while maintaining FTS query patterns.
3. AWS Free Tier is Sufficient for Real Deployment
Our entire stack runs on AWS Free Tier:
- EC2 t2.micro: 750 hours/month free
- S3: 5GB storage free
- CloudFront: 1TB transfer free
- API Gateway: 1M requests free
Current usage: ~200 requests/day, well within limits. The constraint is not AWS cost but Groq API rate limits (30 requests/minute).
4. AWS Bedrock Provides Production-Grade AI
AWS Bedrock's Claude 3 Sonnet delivers consistent 3-8 second response times with built-in retry logic and error handling. The managed service eliminates API key management, rate limit concerns, and infrastructure overhead. Integration with IAM roles on EC2 provides secure, credential-free access.
5. Academic Data Quality Varies Dramatically
arXiv papers have clean metadata (title, abstract, authors). NASA ADS papers have inconsistent formatting, missing abstracts, and complex bibcodes. We spent 40% of development time on data cleaning and normalization.
6. Users Trust Verification Scores More Than Raw Papers
Early testing showed users overwhelmed by 50 papers. Adding verification scores (23% supported, 77% contradicted) with confidence levels made results immediately actionable. The AI's role is not to answer questions but to synthesize evidence.
Constraints and Trade-offs
Constraint 1: Bedrock throttling limits (default: 10 req/sec)
- Impact: Can't verify >600 claims/minute
- Mitigation: Request quota increase, implement request queuing
Constraint 2: EC2 t2.micro CPU limits
- Impact: Slow under heavy load (>10 concurrent users)
- Mitigation: CloudFront caching, API Gateway throttling
Constraint 3: FTS5 doesn't understand semantics
- Impact: Misses semantically similar terms
- Mitigation: Keyword expansion, synonym lists (future)
Constraint 4: Limited to Space Science domain
- Impact: Can't verify claims in biology, chemistry, etc.
- Mitigation: Modular architecture allows adding domains
Future Scope
- Multi-domain expansion: Add biology, chemistry, physics databases (targeting 5M+ papers)
- Aurora Serverless migration: Scale database layer for 10K+ concurrent users
- Lambda@Edge: Move verification logic to edge for <1s response times
- Real-time updates: Sync with arXiv daily feed using EventBridge
- Citation export: Generate BibTeX/APA citations with S3 storage
- Collaborative verification: Allow users to flag incorrect analyses, stored in DynamoDB
