Getting Started with Oracle Database@AWS - Architecture and Key Components
In this session, we explore Oracle Database@AWS offering that brings Oracle Exadata to AWS data centers. We dive into: The architectural components including OCI child sites, ODB networks, and Oracle Exadata infrastructure How the service integrates Oracle and AWS environments Network connectivity options including ODB peering, Transit Gateway, and Cloud WAN integration Key features like AWS service integrations, resource sharing, and security capabilities Setup and configuration best practices
In the session, we discuss Oracle Database at AWS, a marketplace offering that became generally available in July 2025. This service represents a partnership between AWS and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) that brings OCI database services directly to AWS customers by deploying Exadata infrastructure inside AWS data centers. The offering addresses a critical gap for enterprise customers who have hard dependencies on Oracle Exadata features and Real Application Clusters (RAC) but want to leverage AWS's ecosystem and services.
The service provides two main offerings: Exadata Database on Dedicated Infrastructure (similar to on-premises Exadata but managed by OCI) and Autonomous Database on Dedicated Infrastructure (a fully managed database service with machine learning capabilities). The architecture involves OCI "child sites" deployed within AWS availability zones, with ODB networks providing connectivity to Exadata resources. Customers can connect their AWS VPCs to these ODB networks either through direct peering or via Transit Gateway for multi-account and multi-region access, with all traffic remaining private and not traversing the public internet.
Currently, the service is available in several AWS regions supporting multi-AZ deployment for high availability, with additional regions planned for 2026. The provisioning process involves contacting OCI sales for a private marketplace offer, linking AWS accounts to OCI tenancy, and creating resources through the AWS console. This unified management experience combines AWS and OCI tools, and customer spend counts toward both AWS and Oracle support commitments, making it an attractive option for organizations with existing commitments to both platforms.
Key Highlights:
- True lift-and-shift capability for Exadata and RAC workloads without requiring code changes
- Native AWS integrations including zero-ETL to Amazon Redshift, S3 backup support, CloudWatch monitoring, and EventBridge connectivity
- Support for Oracle Database 23 AI with vector search capabilities for generative AI applications
- Minimum configuration of two DB servers and three storage servers (quarter rack equivalent) with scalability options
- Shared responsibility model where OCI manages physical infrastructure patching while customers handle VM cluster operations
- Multi-AZ deployment support for high availability in currently available regions
- Full access to Exadata features including smart scan, query offloading, and hybrid columnar compression
- Dual spend recognition counting toward both AWS commitments and Oracle Support Rewards
