Retro AI Snake: Reviving a Classic Game with a Modern AI Twist

A retro-inspired Snake game rebuilt with modern UI/UX and a smart rule-based AI Coach, created as part of the Kiro Week 4 “Retro Revival” challenge to explore complex game logic with AI assistance.

Introduction

Retro games have always had a unique charm. They are simple to understand, challenging to master, and still fun even today. For the Kiro Week 4 Challenge: Retro Revival, the idea was to recreate a classic game or retro-style interface and improve it with a modern AI touch while focusing on strong logical thinking.
For this challenge, I decided to rebuild the classic Snake game and enhance it with a rule-based AI Coach that supports the player during gameplay. This project is called Retro AI Snake.

Challenge Objective

The goal of this challenge was to build a working prototype that:
  • Revives a classic game or retro user interface
  • Adds a modern AI element to gameplay or visuals
  • Demonstrates solid logic and problem solving
  • Clearly shows how Kiro helped speed up development
This project meets all these goals while keeping the experience simple, enjoyable, and easy to follow.

Why Snake?

Snake may look simple at first, but it involves more logic than expected. Behind the scenes, the game requires:
  • Grid-based movement
  • Accurate collision detection
  • Careful state management
  • Difficulty that changes as the game progresses
  • Real-time decisions on every move
By building Snake from scratch, I could focus on understanding the core mechanics and use AI to support the player rather than take control away from them.

The Modern AI Twist: AI Coach

Instead of using heavy machine learning models, this project uses a rule-based AI Coach that runs directly in the browser.
The AI Coach observes the snake’s position and movement and looks for risky situations such as getting too close to walls or creating tight loops. Based on this, it provides short and helpful messages during gameplay.
Some examples of AI hints include:
  • “Careful, wall ahead”
  • “You’re cornering yourself”
  • “Good move, keep space open”
This approach keeps the game fast and lightweight while still offering intelligent guidance to the player.

UI and UX: Retro Feel with Modern Comfort

The user interface is inspired by classic arcade games and early desktop designs. The game uses a pixel-style grid, a dark background, and a neon green snake to create a retro look.
From a user experience point of view, the game is designed to feel smooth and intuitive. Clear score display, simple controls, and visible buttons for starting, pausing, and restarting help players focus on gameplay without confusion.

Tech Stack

The project is built using:
  • HTML for structure
  • CSS for retro-inspired styling
  • Vanilla JavaScript for all game logic
  • Rule-based AI logic for real-time coaching
No external APIs or API keys are required. Everything runs locally in the browser, making the setup simple and reliable.

How Kiro Helped During Development

Kiro played an important role throughout the development of this project. It helped me plan the overall game structure, write clean and readable game logic, design the AI Coach rules, and improve the overall UI and UX.
Because of Kiro’s assistance, I was able to spend more time refining the logic and gameplay instead of getting stuck on repetitive setup or basic errors. Screenshots of Kiro prompts and responses are included to clearly show how it supported the development process.

Project Repository

The repository includes the complete source code, the required .kiro directory at the root, and a README with an MIT License.

Learning Outcomes

Working on this project helped me strengthen my understanding of complex game logic, state management, real-time decision systems, and AI-assisted development. It also helped me think more carefully about user experience and design choices.
Most importantly, this project shows that classic ideas can still feel fresh when combined with modern tools and thoughtful design.

Final Thoughts

Retro AI Snake is a small but meaningful attempt to bring together nostalgia and modern AI-assisted development. It shows how even simple games can be powerful learning experiences when built with intention and care.
