Automated Release Notes Generator with KIRO IDE
AI-powered release notes and changelog generator with AWS Kiro IDE that transforms tedious GitHub commits into polished documentation automatically.
Overview
The Release Notes Generator is a web application, rapidly developed using AWS Kiro IDE that automates the creation of release notes and changelogs from GitHub repositories. The system fetches pull requests and commits from the GitHub API, parses conventional commit messages, and generates formatted markdown output for both release notes and changelogs. The application provides a user-friendly interface for specifying repository details and date ranges, with optional authentication support. The architecture is designed to be extensible for future support of additional version control platforms such as Bitbucket.
Problem
Creating release notes and changelogs is one of those repetitive, boring yet critically important tasks that every development team faces. For every release, teams need to:
- Review pull requests and commits
- Extract meaningful changes
- Categorize updates into features, bug fixes, and improvements
- Format the content appropriately for different audiences
This manual process is time-consuming, error-prone, and takes developers away from what they do best - writing code. While important for stakeholders and users, the repetitive nature makes it a prime candidate for automation.
Who Benefits?
This application helps:
- Development Teams: Save hours of manual work per release
- Project Managers: Get consistent, well-formatted release documentation
- Stakeholders: Receive clear, organized updates about product changes
Architecture
This architecture ensures clean separation of concerns and makes it easy to add support for additional version control platforms in the future.

The Release Notes Generator is a full-stack web application that automates the entire process:
How It Works
- User enters repository URL and date range through a clean web interface
- Backend fetches pull requests and commits from GitHub API
- Smart parser analyzes conventional commit messages (feat:, fix:, docs:, etc.)
- AWS Bedrock (Claude AI) generates human-readable content from structured data
- Two outputs are generated:
- Release Notes: User-facing summary of features and bug fixes
- Changelog: Comprehensive technical documentation for developers
Key Features
- Supports both public and private repositories
- Parses conventional commit format for automatic categorization
- AI-powered content generation using AWS Bedrock
- Clean, responsive web interface
- One-click copy to clipboard functionality
- Extensible architecture for future VCS platforms

How AWS Kiro IDE Accelerated Development
AWS Kiro IDE was instrumental in speeding up development through:
- Structured Workflow: Kiro's task-based approach with clear requirements, design docs, and implementation plans kept development organized and focused
- AI-Assisted Development: Rapid code generation for boilerplate components, TypeScript interfaces, and test structures reduced manual coding time significantly
- Seamless AWS Integration: Pre-configured AWS SDK setup and built-in Bedrock integration made it easy to leverage AI capabilities without complex configuration
- Rapid Iteration: Hot reload, integrated debugging, and real-time testing enabled quick feedback loops and faster problem-solving

Task Wise execution:
Below screenshots show how AWS KIRO executes tasks step by step once a developer initiates the Task.
Note:
- If there are any errors, KIRO agent automatically retries with the next available option.
- If there are any queries or clarification, KIRO requests/waits for user input
- If Autopilot is not enabled in the KIRO agent chat, KIRO requests user permissions to trust and run the command.
- If the command is marked trusted in the previous run, automatically it is added to the trusted list and executed next time without user confirmation.
- Once the task is started, KIRO marks the tasks and sub-tasks as “In Progress”. The completed task/sub-task will be automatically marked “Completed” in the implementation plan once execution is complete.

Conclusion
The Release Notes Generator demonstrates how automation can eliminate tedious but essential development tasks. What once took hours of manual work now completes in seconds with better consistency and formatting.
AWS Kiro IDE proved invaluable in accelerating this project from concept to completion. Its structured approach, AI assistance, and seamless AWS integration reduced development time significantly while maintaining code quality.
