Unlocking the Science of Public Speaking: My AWS New Voices Journey

As an AWS Golden Jacket, I used to rely entirely on intuition when presenting. Graduating from the AWS New Voices program completely changed that. In this article, I reflect on my journey from empirical public speaking to mastering a structured, science-backed framework. From crafting powerful hooks to stepping out of my comfort zone in a second language, here is how this experience has prepared me to level up my future presentations for the community.

Unlocking the Science of Public Speaking: My AWS New Voices Journey

For nearly a year now, I have had the privilege and honor of wearing the AWS Golden Jacket. It is a recognition that has opened many doors, allowing me to step onto various stages to share knowledge and give back to the incredible cloud community. However, if I am being completely honest about my path, my approach to public speaking was entirely empirical. I used to build my presentations based purely on what I considered logical or intuitive. I relied on my lack of shyness, good posture, and solid vocal intonation, believing that as long as the technical content was accurate and told sequentially, the talk would be a success.
Yet, after every presentation, a nagging feeling persisted. I knew deep down that something was missing. While the audience received the facts, I wasn't entirely sure if I was truly connecting with them. I had seen high-impact presentations before—the kind of TED-style talks that keep you glued to your seat and leave you feeling inspired—but I simply didn't know how to bridge the gap between delivering raw data and creating an unforgettable experience. I didn't understand the actual science behind effective public speaking.
That was until I joined the AWS New Voices program.

The Blueprint for High-Impact Presentations

The AWS New Voices program completely shifted my perspective by introducing me to a structured framework designed to capture and hold an audience's attention. I learned that two speakers can present the exact same technical content or architectural idea, yet achieve completely opposite results: one leaves the room thrilled and motivated, while the other leaves them bored. The difference lies entirely in how you frame the story and connect with the people in front of you.
Through the program, I mastered a clear, three-step process to completely transform my presentations:
  1. Understand Your Audience and Purpose: Before writing a single slide, you must know exactly who you are speaking to. What do they already know? What are their blind spots? What do they care about most? More importantly, you must define the precise outcome you want to achieve and the three core takeaways you want the audience to remember long after the event ends.
  2. Craft a Powerful Introduction: You cannot start a presentation with a dry greeting. You need a hook—a personal story, a striking statistic, a thought-provoking question, or a strong visual element that immediately grabs the room. From there, you must establish your credibility (sharing certifications, achievements, and experience) so the audience understands why they should trust you. Finally, you must clearly state what they will gain from listening to your talk.
  3. Deliver and Conclude with Impact: The body of the presentation must seamlessly weave those three core takeaways together, building a narrative arc that culminates in a memorable, powerful conclusion.

Stepping Far Outside My Comfort Zone

Beyond the invaluable technical frameworks, AWS New Voices pushed me to grow on a personal level. As a non-native English speaker, being asked to participate in impromptu dialogues and improvise completely in English was a massive challenge. It forced me to step completely out of my comfort zone and face the natural anxiety that comes with communicating complex ideas in a second language.
However, this challenge became one of the most enriching aspects of the entire journey. The program provided a safe space to share these nerves and learn practical tips to manage pre-stage anxiety. Furthermore, collaborating closely with fellow AWS Community Builders and AWS User Group Leaders created an incredible environment of mutual support. We were all learning, adapting, and elevating our skills together.

The Power of Three Minutes—and What Lies Ahead

The ultimate test of our growth was preparing a 3-minute lightning talk. At first, condensing a powerful idea into just 180 seconds felt nearly impossible. However, by strictly applying the structure we learned—the hook, the credibility, the key takeaways, and the strong conclusion—we proved that you do not need an hour to make an impact. You can truly connect and deliver a powerful message in just three minutes.
Finishing this program fills me with immense joy and a treasure trove of actionable knowledge. Public speaking and community contribution are passions I will continue to pursue. If I can deliver a meaningful message in just three minutes using this new toolkit, I cannot wait to see what I will achieve in my upcoming 20, 30, or 45-minute presentations. The journey doesn't end here; it is just the beginning of a more impactful way to share my passion for AWS with the world.
