I am sharing some best practices to run the AWS Elastic Kubernetes Cluster efficiently and in low cost.
Kubernetes Version Support Tier.
AWS EKS Cluster pricing is dependent on the Kubernetes version support tier. AWS supports two tier - standard Kubernetes version support and extended Kubernetes version support.
Standard Kubernetes Version support cost $ 0.10 per hour, avg $72 per month.
Extended Kubernetes Version support cost $ 0.60 per hour, avg $ 432 per month.
We can see how Standard Kubernetes Version support help us save around $350 per month per cluster.
How to ensure we stay in standard Kubernetes version support in production?
  1. Plan for Kubernetes Version upgrade.
  2. Create a Kubernetes cluster for POC and test it.
  3. Communicate with stakeholder and plan the upgrade.
  4. Take backup of data.
  5. Route the traffic before the deployment.
  6. Cordon Kubernetes worker nodes.
