VPC_12: VPC Best Practices and Real-World Case Studies

VPC Best Practices and Real-World Case Studies

We made it to Post 12 of our AWS VPC Learning Series! It’s time to tie it all together with best practices and real-world examples. I’ve messed up VPCs before (hello, overlapping CIDRs), so let’s learn from my mistakes and build like pros.

Best Practices

  • CIDR Planning: Avoid overlaps; use 10.0.0.0/16 for flexibility.
  • Security: Use least privilege for Security Groups/NACLs.
  • Cost: Use Gateway Endpoints for S3 to save on data transfer.
  • Monitoring: Always enable Flow Logs for troubleshooting.

Case Study: E-Commerce Backend

Imagine an e-commerce app:
  • VPC: 10.0.0.0/16.
  • Public Subnet: Web servers with Security Group (HTTP/HTTPS).
  • Private Subnet: Database with endpoint to S3.
  • Transit Gateway: Connects to a payment processing VPC.

Activity: Design Your Own VPC

What You Need:
Steps:
  1. Sketch a VPC for a blog app with:
    • Public subnet for web servers.
    • Private subnet for a database.
    • S3 endpoint and Flow Logs.
  2. Share your diagram in the comments or tweet with #AWSVPCLearning.
Challenge: How would you add a second region for redundancy? Share your ideas!

Cleanup

No resources created, but delete any test VPCs to stay tidy.
