Build Ultimate GenAI Developer Stack using Amazon Q Developer CLI

Using Amazon Q Developer CLI , Develop an enterprise-grade development infrastructure setup(Cloud Formation template and scripts which provision VS Code server IDE with pre-installed plug-ins and Q CLI along with popular MCP servers) at startup-friendly costs through intelligent spot instance management, multi-AZ high availability, and automated environment provisioning, enabling teams to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure management.

Build Ultimate GenAI Developer Stack using Amazon Q Developer CLI

๐Ÿš€ Executive Summary

This comprehensive implementation was developed using Amazon Q CLI, which delivers enterprise-grade development infrastructure at startup-friendly costs through intelligent spot instance management, multi-AZ high availability, and automated environment provisioning, enabling teams to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure management.

Problem

At present, i have a windows laptop and there is no way i can natively install q cli on it nor its possible to install q on cloudshell on AWS Cloud. Also, my local windows laptop does not have enough compute capacity to run 10s and 100s of MCP servers locally in my local VS Code app.

Solution

This prompted me to come up in my multiple iterations with Amazon Q CLI to develop a secure, reliable , performant, cost-effective solution to create a q cli cloudformation stack, to which i can connect remotely from my PC or Mobile, ready to use IDE environment (VS code)as well as Amazon Q cli with MCP many servers pre-enabled, to which i can connect remotely and start using right away.

๐ŸŽฏ Deploying the solution to AWS

๐ŸŽฏ Connect to Spot instance using remote-ssh plug-in of your Local Vs code

๐ŸŽฏ Connect to Spot instance using remote-ssh plug-in of Vs code from Mobile(I used xTerminal app on my iphone)

Use ssh client app on your mobile to connect to Elastic IP of EC2 Spot instance and access q cli on the go

๐ŸŽฏ How Q Developer Helped

Used Q CLI for troubleshooting the issue/error and provide suggestion.
Used Q CLI for providing optimization techniques and iterate.
Used Q CLI for documenting the solution.
Used Q CLI for getting suggestions for improvement areas.
Used Q CLI for automation.

๐ŸŽฏ Lessons Learned

Create custom rules and place them in rules/ folder which guide amazon q to follow thru.
Create global context so that context is saved at account level for forthcoming q cli sessions.
Iterate over the code generated until you are satisfied with the outcome.

๐ŸŽฏ Quick Start

Prerequisites

  • AWS CLI configured with appropriate permissions
  • SSH key pair (amazon-q-key-uswest2) in your AWS account
  • bc calculator installed (sudo apt-get install bc)
