Kiro Enterprise Post-Rollout Setup Guide for Cost Control, Monitoring & Governance
Congratulations on rolling out Kiro Enterprise! To help you get the most value while maintaining full control over usage, costs, and security, here are the essential configurations we recommend setting up right away.
0. Initial Onboarding (Do This First)
Before configuring monitoring or governance, complete these foundational steps:
- Create a Kiro Profile – In the Kiro Console, choose "Sign up for Kiro" to create your profile. This is the foundational link between your user identities, subscriptions, and settings. One profile per AWS account per region: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/getting-started
- Connect Identity Provider – Link your corporate IdP (IAM Identity Center, Okta, or Entra) so users authenticate with existing credentials: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/identity-provider
- Subscribe Users – Import users/groups and assign tiers (Pro, Pro+, Power) from the Users & Groups page: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/subscribe
- Cancel Individual Accounts – Users with existing personal Kiro subscriptions must cancel, sign out fully, and re-sign in with their org identity. Otherwise they'll be billed individually instead of through the enterprise license.
- Multi-Account Visibility – If using AWS Organizations, enable "Member account subscriptions" in Settings to view all subscriptions across accounts in one place: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/settings/
- Clients Available – Kiro works across IDE (desktop), CLI (terminal), and Web App — all governed by the same enterprise profile.
1. Monitoring User Activity
Visibility into how developers use Kiro helps you optimize license allocation, detect anomalies, and demonstrate ROI to leadership. Enable these in Kiro Console → Settings:
- Usage Dashboard – Real-time aggregate view of active users, credits consumed, and subscriptions by tier: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/monitor-and-track/dashboard
- Per-User Activity Reports – Daily CSV delivered to your S3 bucket with credits used, messages, model breakdown, and overage per user: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/monitor-and-track/user-activity
- Prompt Logging – Records all prompts and Kiro's responses to your own S3 bucket for compliance, audit, and IP protection: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/monitor-and-track/prompt-logging/
2. Cost & Budget Controls
Without these controls, individual developers can inadvertently drive up costs. These settings ensure predictable spend aligned to your budget.
Overage is opt-in — by default, users are hard-capped at their tier's credit limit. Once credits are exhausted, Kiro stops responding until the next billing cycle.
Recommended approach:
- Keep Overages OFF (default) for general teams to prevent cost surprises: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/settings/
- Enable Overages selectively for teams in critical development cycles (e.g., product launches, sprint deadlines, migration windows) where developer productivity loss from hitting the cap outweighs the $0.04/credit overage cost. You can enable/disable this at any time from Settings without disrupting users.
- Assign tiers per user/group to right-size spend based on role and expected usage: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/subscription-management/
- Billing Data Exports with resource IDs for per-user cost tracking and chargeback: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/billing
- Team-level chargeback via identity provider attributes to allocate costs back to business units: https://repost.aws/articles/ARe4l3c6QLSYedVVa-KBom2Q/
- AWS Budgets on the Kiro account for proactive threshold alerts before costs escalate: https://aws.amazon.com/aws-cost-management/aws-budgets/
💡 Pro tip: For a Power user ($200/mo, 10,000 credits), even 2,000 overage credits in a heavy sprint month would only add $80 — far less than the cost of a blocked developer waiting for the next cycle. Enable overages strategically during critical milestones, then disable once the sprint concludes.
3. Kiro-Native Governance Guardrails
These guardrails ensure developers operate within your organization's security policies and prevent unauthorized data exposure or tool usage. All managed via Kiro Console → Settings → Shared settings:
- Identity Provider (IAM Identity Center / Okta / Entra) — ensures only corporate-authenticated users access Kiro and access is auto-revoked on offboarding: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/identity-provider
- MCP Server Allowlist – Restricts which external tool servers developers can connect to, preventing data leakage to unapproved third-party services. Create a JSON registry file, host over HTTPS, and add the URL in Settings: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/governance/mcp/
- Model Governance – Toggle "Control which models are available to users" to curate an approved list and set a default model across all clients: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/governance/model
- Code Reference Filtering – By default, Kiro suppresses code suggestions that are similar to publicly available open-source code. If you enable "Include suggestions with code references," Kiro will show those suggestions along with source attribution so your legal/compliance team can review licensing implications: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/settings/
- Web Tools – Disable web_search/web_fetch if your security posture requires no external data retrieval: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/settings/
- Encryption (CMK) – Use your own KMS key for data-at-rest encryption to meet regulatory requirements: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/settings/
- IAM Permissions for console admin access — limit who can change settings or manage subscriptions: https://kiro.dev/docs/enterprise/iam/
