How I Actually Started Learning Cloud Computing - AWS (And What Helped Most)
A honest look at how I got started with AWS what I built, what actually helped, and the one community I didn't expect to learn the most from
Honestly, it started with curiosity more than anything else.
I kept seeing AWS pop up everywhere - job descriptions, project repos, tech blogs. It was hard to ignore. At some point I realized that if I wanted to build things that actually work at scale, I needed to understand the infrastructure behind it.
AWS made sense to start with because:
- It is the most widely used cloud platform in the industry
- It has a Free Tier which means I can actually practice without paying
- The documentation and community around it is huge
- Almost every company you'd want to work at uses it in some form
So I just started.
What I Wanted to Get Out of It
I am a student, and like most students I had a gap between what I was learning in class and what was actually being used in the real world. Cloud was one of those gaps.
My goals were simple:
- Understand the core AWS services and what they actually do
- Build small projects using the Free Tier to get hands-on experience
- Document what I learn so it actually sticks
- Put something on GitHub that shows I can build real things
Nothing fancy. Just start and keep going.
What I Started Building
The best way I found to learn was to just pick a project and figure it out along the way. Here is what I started with:
- Launching an EC2 instance and hosting a basic webpage on it
- Building a simple REST API using API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB
- Hosting a static website on S3 and serving it through CloudFront
- Setting up automatic S3 backups using Lambda and EventBridge
- Learning IAM properly - users, roles, policies - because I kept breaking things without it
These covered the basics of compute, storage, serverless, and security. Small projects but they taught me a lot.
Where I Found Help Along the Way
One thing I did not expect was how many free resources exist. Here is what actually helped me:
| Resource | Why I Used It |
|---|---|
| AWS Free Tier | Hands-on practice without spending anything |
| AWS SkillBuilder | Official learning paths, well structured |
| freeCodeCamp AWS Series | Beginner friendly, easy to follow |
| AWS Educate | Extra credits and guided labs for students |
| AWS Builder Center Articles | Great for understanding confusing services |
A Quick Watch If You Prefer Video
If you are more of a visual learner, I made a video covering the basics of AWS and cloud computing what it is, how it works, and why it matters. A good starting point before diving into hands-on stuff. Check it out here → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOyooVyQzDI
